I went with Les Paul on this one.
Apparently, you have never heard John McLaughlin...on electric or acoustic.

IMO, I would have been comfortable with McLaughlin going all the way.

Same here Jason. From a technical standpoint and for all around guitar prowess, I doubt there is anybody in the list that can match him.

Actually, I never heard of him till this poll. And going by influencing other people, I think Les Paul did.

Poll: The Greatest Guitarist of All Time, Round 2 — Randy Rhoads Vs. Mark Tremonti

http://www.guitarworld.com/poll-greates ... k-tremonti

This is a no brainer - Randy Rhoads ...

Edit: It is a close one. I am shocked. I thought Rhoads would be way ahead. It must be that popularity thing again.

I completely agree Jeff, there are plenty of great guitarists in that poll, but none that I would actually feel comfortable voting for against McLaughlin in a "greatest guitarist" poll.

I can see where one might be inclined to think that his influence has been less, just because his name recognition isn't as apparent as some of the others; but I actually think his influence might be significantly more than some of the others. Sure, none of the current popsters cite him as an influence, but there might not be anybody else on that list who has had as real and lasting of an impact across the board (alright, maybe Hendrix). Many of the people who are influencing others in ALL genres cite him as a big influence.

I have read articles where such luminaries from that very poll like Steve Vai, Zakk Wylde, Warren Haynes, Zappa, Eric Johnson, Holdsworth, Jason Becker, Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, Kirk Hammett, and Dimebag all give him praise and acknowledge his influence on their playing and composition. That's just a short list from the pool without even looking too deeply, if I were to go on, the list would get much bigger. How many people has that list influenced? He gave Jimmy Page guitar lessons for crying out loud! Anyway, I'm getting down off my soapbox...I just wanted to give my own .02 about the John thing.

I just went back and looked again. I'm glad to see that Randy has caught up and actually pulled ahead. When I voted this morning, Tremonti was actually ahead. That scared me.

Yeah, you can't compare Tremonti to Rhoads. Albeit that Tremonti is a good guitar player. But he doesn't compare to Rhoads.

I just voted for Dickey Betts, and he is way ahead, but its early in the day. I have seen both of these guitarists play many times and probably own about 25 albums and CDs with these guitarists playing with their bands and solo projects.

Oh, do I wish!!!!!

  Thanks for the links.

Now that I think about it, I was working in the Poconos that summer, and was only about 1 hour away from Philly when those vids were recorded. I did go to see the Allman Brothers Band that fall at the Philly Spectrum.
