Songs with Harmonicas. Which are the best?

Post by f.sciarrillo »

I was listening to Baba O'riley tonight and Roger Daltry does a decent Harmonica solo in it. So it led me to wonder what some of your favorite songs with harmonica in them are?

Here is Baba O'riley (Teenage Wasteland)

What are some others?

Just listen to the entire Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson catalogues.
Little Walter was the first guy who started playing through a tube amp overdriven and made it cool to be a harp player. He still has the best tone of all time, IMHO. Aside from his solo career, he spend most of his career in Muddy Waters' band.

Always was a huge fan of Tom Petty's "You Don't Know How it Feels" It's not an earth shattering harmonica lick. But it's catchy and accents the song nicely. The band Blessid Union of Souls always made good use of the harmonica in many of their songs as well.
Videos destroyed the vitality of rock and roll. Before that, music said, "Listen to me." Now it says, "Look at me."

"Whammer Jammer" by the J. Geils Band is a fun tune, featuring the incomparably named Magic Dick on harp. There are a ton of live versions on YouTube. I love his hook on "Give It To Me", all two notes of it. So simple but it makes the song.

I always suspected that Little Walter was a big influence, maybe subliminally, on a lot of electric guitarists who came after. He had that molten distortion and wild phrasing well before guys like Hendrix came along.

Hell yeah Beth! Supertramp has always been a vasty under-rated band. Breakfast in America is a classic record!

Of course I'm going to say The Wizard. Blackfoot, Little Walter and are both good ones too. I would add Howlin Wolf's 'How Many More Years' as an excellent track. But when I think of harmonica my mind goes to John Popper. 'But Anyway' and 'Carolina Blues' are two very good ones. Love the sound of a harp played through a green bullet. I've always wanted to play Harmonica. But everytime I try, it sounds like I'm using a duck press with a live duck. Although I do play the baddest air-harp around. I'll cut heads with anyone!
