tribute
At the end of the day we're all musicians. It doesn't matter if you wear a wig or matching socks or you and your band mates don't match at all...goal is getting the crowd to your shows...playing the best you can play the songs whether you put your own spin on them or exactly like the record.

That can show two things. One: They are really that good, or Two: David Gilmour loves to see people honor him with a tribute band like that. Or it could be both. I am thinking it is both .... That was really cool of him to do that.Merge wrote:David Gilmour booked Aussie Floyd to play his 50th birthday party. They must be doing something right.

Screw it
Okay, so here's my opinion.
Whatever you play is fine by me. I may not care for it. Like Rob said, if you don't like it, don't listen to it.
As for tribute bands... if they are digging it and the crowd is digging it then go for it! Whether they dress up or not doesn't matter to me. If it gets the band and crowd into the spirit of the show by dressing up then that's all the better.
I believe the same thing goes for the cover bands as well.
Where I lose respect is when the tribute musicians are off the stage and still act the part. There was a local tribute band years ago around 'toon town and when the singer was off stage he still played the role. Pretty pathetic at that point. To me, you have seriously lost your own identity.
Also, I'd love to see Penntera, those boys seem like they could tear it the F**k up!

Here's my "guy who plays in tribute bands" perspective....
My artistic background includes a good amount of theater. I've played all sorts of roles, from a random tree in the background to Shakespearean characters.
In most bands I'm just myself... a dude from Altoona who plays guitar. But if someone asked me to portray Alex Lifeson? Or Ace Frehley? Angus Young? I wouldn't view it any differently from playing Hamlet or Dracula or a tree in the background. It'd just be a much more specialized role that requires some actual guitar chops.

Re: Screw it
I know a drummer who was in a Poison tribute band for a while. One time he called the singer to discuss some band business and the singer's wife answered. The drummer asked her if so-and-so was there. When the singer got on the phone, he told the drummer to always refer to him as "Bret" when conducting band business.Mysterytrain wrote:

Ha! Well, compared to 99% of the general population, Ace is an exceptional guitarist. There probably aren't many actors that could walk on stage and casually play a set of KISS. Johnny Depp could. Depp has some skills.bassist_25 wrote:Except your Ace Frehley example.StumbleFingers wrote:It'd just be a much more specialized role that requires some actual guitar chops.
Is Johnny Depp destined to play the lead in the Keith Richards story? That is a movie and actor waiting to happen.StumbleFingers wrote:Ha! I never heard Depp play, but I remember reading an interview from Noel Gallagher and Noel say that Johnny was a bad ass guitarist.
I can't read any Hunter S. Thompson without having Depp's voice as the narration in my head.

Space, Penntera's drummer used to drum in Leadfoot. I did some sub work with them a while back and the dude is amazing. He recreated the drum intro for Hot For Teacher. You better know what you're doing to pull that off well.

You can do whatever the fuck you want, your VICTOR SYNN!! Anyway, my "opinion" on it is this, if your good at it just do it...if your in a tribute, original or just a cover band. For the original guys, I think it's harder (unless your in a band with Vipond,haha..love ya dudes)....The tribute guys have their material solid (for the most part) and people who go to see them do so BECAUSE they are a tribute. Cover bands are ALWAYS gonna do it because good cover bands play the shit people want to hear even if they listened to it all day on the radio...Hell, I'd even go see a shitty cover band just to hear their take on the songs they play. OK, don't get me wrong, I'm allowed to say "Shitty Cover Band" because well, we smell our own. Anyway, fuck the ranting....ORIGINAL, COVER, or TRIBUTE......just play.Victor Synn wrote:Not sure if I should answer to this thread, since I'm in a tribute band.
