The Pittsburgh Pirates are just plain FUN this year !

Post by Hawk »

Winning or loosing, I'm a Pirate fan. I'm lovin' 'em this year.

What do ya think ? Can they keep it up after the All Star break or will they faulter like last year ? IMHO they will make the playoffs at the very least.

I'm guardedly optimistic they can keep it up after the All Star Break. I think their overall pitching is in a better place this year than last, and with guys like Burnett and Bedard who have been through the grinds of pitching full seasons (especially Burnett, who did it under the pressure of being a Yankee), they can guide the younger pitchers as to how to hang in there for the duration.

And the hitting seems to have gotten a lot stronger in recent weeks; everybody seems to be finding their groove at the bat. If they can keep up with that type of offense, they can withstand a slight dip in the pitching if some of the arms start to get tired down the stretch.

And lastly, their schedule is favorable if they can keep up the momentum; several series against Houston and the Cubs (both terrible this year). They also seem to be holding their own quite well in division, so if they can keep pace there, playoffs are very much a possibility.

I think A.J. Burnett brought "ATTITIDE" to the team and infected all of them with it. First the pitchers caught it and then the hitters caught it. They seem to fight / play with more aggression and with a belief in themselves this year. And it seems Burnett might be the team leader they lacked last year. All said while I'm  at the Yankees.

Its LOSING, with one O

Loosing is the act of setting something loose, like a caged bird.

Now, you'll probably do it on purpose just to piss me off, lol.

Yeppers, the Bucs are hot, hot, hot...even better than last year...but then came the All-Star break...

It is very exciting to finally get to watch the Bucs finally come together.
I just hope that after the break they can keep it going and come the trade deadline they go after a big bat.
I am stoked about them, they haven't made the playoffs since I was 22!!!!

I am loving every minute of seeing them so good this year. McCutchen is an animal! What does he have now, 17 home runs? I just hope no one wakes me up, this is the best dream I had about the Pirates in a long time.

The Pirates looked good last year, until the All Star break. They had a poor 2nd half, I was hoping they'd make the playoffs. I think they need to add 1 more good hitter at the trade deadline. If they can do that, I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the playoffs.
Pour me another one, cause I'll never find the silver lining in this cloud.

They're trying for Shane Victorino. Also, one more ace in the pitching rotation would make them practically unstoppable.

I'm surprised that Burnett has done so well. He looked horrible last season in New York.

I'm thinking that Burnett's success this year is partially about getting away from the pressure cooker that was playing in New York. I think things got worse for him there when he started faltering, and the pressure by the fans and New York media affected him. It's less stressful with the Pirates, and he's hearing more cheers and appreciation from the stands with his current success.

Lovin me some Pittsburgh Pirates this year. Its been a long, long wait but it seems like they finally have a good GM and management group. I cant say enough about Andrew McCutchen. He's leading the league in almost every offensive stat, and seems like a real positive guy. Neil Walker is a solid infielder and it looks like his bat is starting to come around. Im optimistic about Tabata and Alvarez, I think the light will go on for those two before seaon's end. Echoeing Hawk and JP about Burnett, he's really brought some veteren leadership to the young staff. And how about the emergence James McDonald this season? His 2.37 ERA ranks 5th in the Majors. Finally lets give some props to Clint Hurdle for piloting this ship of young Buccaneers. I dont think they're going to fall apart this year, so maybe we can dust off those Green Weenies after 20 years!

Seconding the Kudos to Clint Hurdle ! He has a keen sense of when to hang with the right guys whom he believes will come around. I heard ESPN one day asking why Alvarez wasn't being sent to triple A to break him out of his slump. Alvarez is hitting better, just needs some consistency. Hurdle sees something in these guys and shows them his faith in them.
