You don't really read what is being said, you read what you want and turn into a joke. It's ok, I really don't expect most people to get what I'm saying.
Trace, I've known ya for a long time now, and I understand what you are getting at. That said, to insinuate that you putting your own feel into a cover song makes you more of an artist/musician than the guys in HF1 or kBand is completely outrageous. I spent 3 years in Scream (think HF1 with no spandex or makeup), and subbed for HF1 several times. I can tell you that the blood, sweat, and tears spent working on that music was just as difficult as writing original music with NailDriver. Anyone who has the cajoñes to get onstage and play is all good in my book.

As far as people not getting what you're saying...remember:

We could fix that for ya Kev. hehehehe. Sure your bandmates in Half Tempted would get quite the giggle out of that.

Seems this kinda topic rears it's ugly head on here at least once or twice a year. And each time it's just nothing more than the same old pissing match over who's got the bigger dick.

I never said I was better or that people don't work hard.
Y'all are putting words in my mouth. I am lamenting that
It's become one big contest & all about numbers & money.
If you think I am targeting anyone you are mistaken. I am simply
Pointing out that the artistry is second.
I am trying to say that is what is important to me. And I see now that is nothing more than Business & yes, total competition. I remember a benefit
In Gallitzin I had one year were we all got together and jammed for a cause.
Now I hear of backstabbing & sheer Cock blocking to get jobs. It's not HF1 I am talking of at all. They are the pioneers of what they do. I look at them as great musicians who are a spoof in a way with the wigs, etc.
But there are others out there running with it now, bands being brought in from other cities doing it, when the bands here can put on damn good shows. And it was pointed out to me rather directly, mind you,
That it's all about MONEY.

But hey, it's the world now isn't it? I left LA because that's all it was.
I came home to a refreshing spirit of creativity & comeraderie.
It's all gone, now. Everyone is so dead set on being the biggest they
Will do anything for that. I'm just gonna play & do what I do, be me.
I won't get rich, won't have giant parties thrown in my honor, be on the
Roster of every festival in town, be a celeb or any of that. I'll just be me.
Singin'.
There was a time when speaking out and trying to change things meant something. Now all it means is that I'm not going along with the plan.
Abbie Hoffman, Timothy Leary, Janis, etc. they all had something to say. I guess I live in the past. But that's ok, I'm fine there.

There is a BIG difference to that kind of Tribute and the one that is being talked about here & y'all know it.

Of course everytime you play someone else's song you pay tribute, homage, reverence, acclamation, approbation, encomium, encouragement, or any other synonym for the word.

BUT you don't PRETEND to be them. That, as Lewis Black might say,
is one Big, Fuck Difference.

For one moment back up and get it that I am pointing out SPECIFIC things.

Look in my eyes
What do you see?
The cult of personality

I know your anger, I know your dreams
I've been everything you want to be
Oh, I'm the cult of personality

Like Mussolini and Kennedy
I'm the cult of personality
The cult of personality
The cult of personality

Neon lights, a Nobel prize
When a mirror speaks, the reflection lies
You don't have to follow me
Only you can set me free

I sell the things you need to be
I'm the smiling face on your TV
Oh, I'm the cult of personality

I exploit you, still you love me
I tell you, one and one makes three
Oh, I'm the cult of personality

Like Joseph Stalin and Gandhi
I'm the cult of personality
The cult of personality
The cult of personality

Neon lights, a Nobel prize
When a leader speaks, that leader dies
You won't have to follow me
Only you can set you free

You gave me fortune, you gave me fame
You gave me power in your God's name
I'm every person you need to be
Oh, I'm the cult of personality

I'm the cult of, I'm the cult of
I'm the cult of, I'm the cult of
I'm the cult of, I'm the cult of
I'm the cult of, I'm the cult of personality

"Hey, man. Do you like Sierra Mist?"
"Sierra Mist? I wouldn't drink it if it was free. It's a blatant ripoff of 7-UP. Why can't the Pepsi company come up with it's own flavors?"

Kinda silly, huh?

What's "silly" is not giving tribute and cover bands a fair shake. Besides, haven't you gotten on RP a few times in the past and bawled when things weren't going your way or you felt another band may have gotten a step ahead of you? I'm pretty sure.

Dude I am in a cover band and if you spent as much time READING what has been written as making trite jokes and accusations you might see that I am being very specific to what KIND of tributes I am knockin'.
As for your other bullshit, PROOVE IT.

I don't care if you are a tribute Band, Cover band, Originals band, brass band, blues band, christian band, country band, garage band, jazz band, rock band, metal band, full blown orchestra, any other type of band that I missed, hell, even a bum bau band - If you play I will listen. Who cares what kind of band you are in. It is all for the same purpose, to entertain people and put smiles on peoples faces. There is no one better than the other, they are all equal.

Eloquently put & I respect your opinion completely.

As for me, I won't lie to make peace. (and I AM NOT accusing you of such a thing)

Jim Price wrote: (And if you're reading this on Rockpage, you likely are not the "casual" fan, you have more than a passing interest in music, and talent matters to you. That's not how the majority of people outside of music think.)

Quoted for clarity. If you haven't wasted a thousand hours daydreaming about the "perfect" show... if you haven't spent many more thousand hours with your instrument... if you haven't played to nobody in some podunk barroom AND rocked a packed room's socks off... if you haven't been taken out by shady people, and taken in by kind people... if you haven't sweated under colored floodlights...
You look at music and entertainment far differently.
We can't expect our audience to "not like" things because we're more sophisticated than them. We're only more sophisticated in that one way, and even that's debatable.
This seems like an extension of the "covers vs. originals" argument, and that one's been making the rounds here for nearly a decade without one iotum of resolution.
Innovate, imitate... either way, SOMEBODY will try to lessen it. Keep your head down, and keep digging.

I don't debate that one bit. BUT I don't have to subscribe to it either.
I failed miserably at one thing in LA. I am the worst ass kisser in history.
Someone out there suggested to me once "You should market yourself like the next Taylor Dane". My remark to that person was very offensive to them and it did my music aspirations very little good.

I am me, thats it, take it or leave it.
