Did you seriously just compare a tribute band to kara-fuckin-oke?! That's a helluva stretch my friend.CHICKSINGA wrote:Ok, no need for defense here. I am voicing my opinion.
To ME a tribute band is just the latest way to make money. But hey the rich bands who made it have ticket sales that are astronomical, so there ya go.
Go see a tribute band and live your heyday, sing along to your favorite songs, dance like it's fuckin illegal. I DON'T CARE
But don't ask me to tell you that I respect it anymore than I do a karaoke band, a bunch of hot chicks dressed in bikini's & witch hats who CAN'T SING without harmonizers & effects layered on effects or any scheme to make more money. I just don't see it in the same way. But if you do, mo powa to ya'll. Gimme someone with an acoustic guitar and a voice from God & You Got MY attention!!!
I dig bands that have talent, work on their craft, write good songs, give an authentic performance & don't make up outlandish Bullshit about talking to fuckin' Brett Michaels on the tour bus last night when they probably NEVER EVEN SET FOOT IN CALIFORNIA. If the sheep be gullible enough to baleeve the hooey then they are welcome to it!!!.
tribute
Being both an artist and a musician I have to say....if I could play drums exactly like Raymond Herrera, or paint exactly like Thomas Kinkade....PLEASE call me a smarmy replacement. I understand the putting 'you' into the song but does drawing a mustache on the Mona Lisa make you any more of an artist, than someone who paints an exact replica of her?CHICKSINGA wrote:Honestly, I don't see music as commerce. I see it as art. So to me tribute bands are smarmy replacements for the real thing. I play covers but I don't wear wigs, spandex or change my voice. I put me into the song & hope my artistic version of it is received well. So far, no complaints. I suppose if I made my living at it i would see things differently.
But there is only one person I know who has the same view of music as I do.

You all have valid points.
But I don't share them. Simple as that. I look at karaoke BANDS & Tribute Bands the same. My opinion.
My band has never been called a snoozefest, but I suppose to some it could be. To each his own. Madonna sells billions. To me she is subpar & I wouldn't walk across the street to see her perform.
I played State College for years. There are cliques but generally the clubs and events are shared by many locals as well as out of town acts. But then you have Bryce Jordan Center too. Of course there are more venues there & the economy is better. At least it was. The current economy has brought out the worst in a lot of things. Altoona's amusement tax keeps The Bigs out for the most part. So everyone fights for a small piece of pie.
I can tell you one thing - I will be there to see The Clarks. There is a band that worked their asses off, wrote thier own material & stayed true to home. CLASS ACT ALL THE WAY!!!

That's cool Trace. To each his/her own as you said. I'm fairly certain none of us lowly, subpar, karaoke bands will shed much of a tear if you don't pay the door fee.

Did I say YOU were subpar or a karaoke band, um Victor - or is that your tribute name? I've heard you sing. You are really good. And I dont know why you dont more often, as yourself.
LOOK Hair Force Makes a ton. I LOOOVE Greg!! I just don't dig Tributes.
Maybe you don't like Adele. I sing the shit out of it, my way. But if you dont like it No skin off my nose, brother. You could rag on me all ya want, I can take it.
Come on, honey, Bring it!!

See what I mean? To each his own, yep he sold BILLIONS, but I look at it as VERY dumbed down art.

I don't think the 13 musicians who played the Led Zeppelin tribute 2 years ago received a single penny. It was a huge musical challenge to try and play Led Zep songs as close to the recorded versions as possible.sstuckey wrote:Did you seriously just compare a tribute band to kara-fuckin-oke?! That's quite admireable of them!! But I'm willin to bet that is not the normal thing.
You all are missing the point here. Do what makes you HAPPY.
What do you care what I think? I'm only voicing my opinion that
the AUDIENCE are the ONES that want it.
They and the biz in general are what I feel is DUMBED DOWN. See, if it wasn't for great bands like ZEP & STONES, ACDC, KISS, ETC, Ya'll would have no Tributes to emulate & Make your BIG BUCKS.
I am old school. I believe in talent, hard work & MOST OF ALL being YOU.

My point is it takes just as much talent, just as much practice, and just as much work to recreate music as it does to create music.sstuckey wrote:To me Thomas Kincaide was no better than a Greeting Card artist.CHICKSINGA wrote: Being both an artist and a musician I have to say....if I could play drums exactly like Raymond Herrera, or paint exactly like Thomas Kinkade....PLEASE call me a smarmy replacement. Musicians spend thousands and thousands of hours honing their skills. Why would anyone care how they choose to use their skills? If they enjoy it and there is a market for it, GREAT ! Kudos !
If they enjoy playing and there is no market for it, kudos for them sticking to doing what they LIKE to do. Great ! Kudos !
If you don't like a band / genre / etc.. just don't go see them, but don't knock them.
Support live musicIANS ! Please

Thank you Hawk. You are a great ambassador for local musicians.
I am not.
I see a lot of kBashing going here. (Unless you're putting down the OTHER karaoke band in the area - which you're not. { yeah, no originality there}).
I don't expect anyone to like it. However, I would caution against calling into question or disrespecting the musicianship, talent, or skill of a group that is both willing and able to perform any one of 1129 songs anytime, anywhere. That number will go up tomorrow.
This business is about making people happy. Music is just the channel through which we choose to do that. Tribute bands, as well as "original " bands, and cover bands, all do that. If any one of us were truly just in it for the art, we wouldn't bother getting up on stage.

Oy!
I am posting my opinion. I am provoking thought. I constantly see
support live music on Facebook and here. It should say "Support live music - but only what draws a lot of people or makes a ton of money"
I am fine with people doing what they want. If i dont like it, I won't go. But I am not fine with bands that aren't bands and the Tribute movement. Thats it. My opinion. I am saying Support Original Bands, Support Cover bands with originality, Support other bands besides the SAME bands that get all the attention from local media.
Why is it that people are afraid to be truthful or outspoken? Vanity Fair just featured an article about how society is not evolving, Mothing new is happening. In the last decade we have been very close to what we were in the 90's, into the millenium. IN MY OPINION that is why. We are SO afraid to speak protest, to be politically incorrect. we are so caught up in what ever brings the biggest bang, the biggest buck, the largest crowd that we are leaving OURSELVES behind.
I'm an opinionated woman. And I'm proud to be. I am not downing any one person or group. If you see yourself in that well then maybe you need to ask yourself why.

Vic can sing the daylights out of R&B songs. You might know him as the screaming dude in Hair Force One, but that's only part of the story. And the same goes for any musician in a cover/tribute/karaoke band.CHICKSINGA wrote:Did I say YOU were subpar or a karaoke band, um Victor - or is that your tribute name? I've heard you sing. Personally, I have a lot of respect for anyone who goes out on a limb and tries something a little crazy. The K Band is a crazy idea. Mad respect for those guys. When Hair Force started, we were the only band around here doing that. Vic and I spent like NINE MONTHS looking for anybody else with the guts to try it. Our first gig, we made maybe $2 a guy. But we had mad fun.
Wait a minute, I got props on Rockpage?!? {crosses off bucket list item}CHICKSINGA wrote: I LOOOVE Greg!!
Mike, Jason was the musical director of that Zep tribute. There are some vids from the show, I think on his FB site. I know Jim Price filmed the show too. I am not sure if JP ever posted the vid links from that.mjb wrote:so.. now theres a movement? i think this thread reminds me of a bowel movement.
