Not sure if any one mentioned Paul Gilbert from Greensburg, he was a shred king in the late 80's. I remember we played at Blondies in Greensburg and paul's Dad was there, our other guitar player was all over the poor guy, wouldn't let him alone asking about his son and stuff. The guy just wanted to relax and have a beer.

Here is another guy from the Johnstown, PA area who made it big.

Joey Covington from East Conemaugh, PA played drums and sang with Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna, Jefferson Starship, The Fenways, Papa John Creach, and many others.

The Stablilzers it is.... I think you can purchase the album at www.onelesstear.com
Yeah, I spoke with Chuck Navaski of One Less Tear, and he spoke of remastering some of that material that he did back when he was like 18 yrs old. He may still have some vinyl copies of the albums

Yes, the Mills Brothers were from Bellefonte. A friend of mine is their nephew and confirmed that.

Also, here is another Pittsburgh guy who made it big --- George Benson.

i think that anyone who gets up on a stage, or plays in front of people should be mentioned. they're are millions of people who would love to play, but can't because they are deathly afraid to even try.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Wild Cherry from Pittsburgh.

Well, at least part of Wild Cherry was mentioned - Donny Iris (or Ierace as he spelled his last name before going solo).

Another local hard rock band that hit the big time is Hardline. They had at least one major hit in the early 90s. Although they were considered to be a Hollywood band, they originated in Harrisburg as Killerhit (saw them a few times). After playing central PA for a year or so, they changed their name to Brunette and relocated to Hollywood - later becoming Hardline.

The guitar player for Sevendust (who was formerly in the band Snot) is from Chambersburg.

The drummer from Warrant is Lynne McDunna's first cousin, and used to spend summers in Altoona. Does that count? --->JMS

I'm pretty sure I have a compilation album with Hardline on it.

Yeah, Hardline was started by Johnny and Joey Gioeli from Lancaster. They certainly had a good line up, since it included Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain from Journey, and killer drummer Dean Castronovo.

Schon was dating their sister and heard them rehearsing. He wanted to be their producer and play in the band. At first they said NO.
... and then the wheel fell off.

There was a band around in the late 80's/early 90's . . . "Lord Tracy." The guitar player was from da 'burgh, I think. I believe I have a CD around here somewhere . . .

And there was Jerry Stanik (spelling?) from Northern Cambria, I believe. Went to New York and was in "The Lost" for awhile . . . I think they did an album or two.

(If I'm wrong on either count, set me straight!)

Ahh yes, earlier I mentioned Mark Panek as having played on a few national releases, but I was thinking of Gerry Stanek on the Lost albums (perhaps Mark did too). Thanks for the inadvertent reminder!

Does anybody have information on late 70s, early 80s Altoona band "Black Diamond" (band members, etc.) ? They released the single "Backstreet Lover" in about 1980 that received some local airplay, and apparently relocated to California (or was it New York?). I wonder what ever happened with them and any of their members.

Wow!!! I haven't heard that name in a looooooonnnnnnnggggggg time! I remember loading and unloading equipment for my dad's band. My Uncle played through a Traynor Amp and the "pleather" cover had Property of Black Diamond spray painted on it.... I thought it was an old band my uncle was in but later found that he had bought the amp from another guy.... No idea what happened to them but you definitely jolted some early days for me!!
