Religion was simply a tool for the first humans to become civilized. In order to maintain a civilized society, rules are needed.

How do you make uncivilized humans conform to the basic laws of society? You tell them that if they break the rules, a god or gods will strike them down, or that they will go to hell or some other terrible place for eternity.

How do you keep some guy from marrying his camel? You tell him that God decrees that marriage is between a man and a woman.

They are just simple rules that organized religions have manipulated and twisted to benefit themselves. Don't forget that during the middle ages, the popes were murderous tyrants, yet the Catholic church still considers them as noble because they rid Europe of so-called barbarians and heathens.
AMEN!!! All organized religions were developed as a means of social control.

Agreed. True religion/faith is within each person individually.

its fine, all an ear is is skin and cartelage and besides that, no matter how many times you sin all you ever have to do is confess and ask for forgivness and wallah your in! don't know why everybody worries about it so bad, there is no running tab, the slate is clean after you confess from what I understand? ashes to ashes and dust to dust ,eat an ear if you must, and if its a sin do not distress, run to church the place to confess.

Well... not quite that simple. If it were, everybody would be getting into heaven  ! There's a little matter of sincerity involved and a commitment to try, with your whole heart and soul, not to screw up the same way twice. You have to try and imagine how your saviour would have lived.... today, and emulate that.

By no means am I saying that I have given this my best shot... but the idea behind confessing your sins is exactly that. Now, confessing through another human being to get to God is the catholicism BS I don't like... JC cut out the middle man when he came around. That's not saying that it doesn't always makes things right when you confess a wrong against someone to the person you wronged either..... that's always a good thing!

Sorry Urbs.... I was fantasizing about your new "lady" tonight!! Um.... can't promise that it won't happen again though either!!

asses to asses and bust to bust , tongue an ear if you must, and if its hard do not distress, move down lower to her breast!! Sorry.... couldn't resist that either... damn, I'll probably do something like that again too... I'm doomed!!! :x

With my father being a Pastor most of my life, I could go on forever on this thread. The thing about organized religion that makes me laugh is that each of your different "religions" -catholic,methodist,baptist,etc- base all of their beliefs on different small part of the bible. Then they bash each other for being wrong, not ever reading the scripture that states "you shall not take anything away or add anything to" the bible as a whole. I believe the bible was written to the individual, not the organization. I don't need someone telling me what he/she thinks the book is saying to me, I can figure that out for myself.
The thing about the "Catholic" confession I don't understand is why confess to a priest and not just straight to God himself? When I was living in Guatemala the churches there had a box in the confession booth, the priest would forgive any of your sins for 10 centavos (about 4 american cents) each. It didn't matter what the sin was.

So....how do we know that a bunch of drunks didn't write the bible? And what happens when the world blows up, and a zillion years from now, people from the center of the earth emerge, and find copies of a bunch of Pink Floyd albums & Hunter S. Thompson books & make that their religion? Think of how many ways you could interpret that kind of stuff, or anything else!

Religion bores me. I like to watch the brown nun on tv sometimes though, and the lady w/ the gold shoes who plays the organ. :)

Have a good friday everyone. Be safe and Perform well!
