May I suggest that you talk about how to find the best quality sounding drums rather than the loudest frikkin' sets and heads that you can find?
We have these little things called microphones in case you think your drums aren't loud enough!

They're drums Jeff...they were intended to be loud. Otherwise it would be a triangle players get together.lonewolf wrote:May I suggest that you talk about how to find the best quality sounding drums rather than the loudest frikkin' sets and heads that you can find?

"There are no loud drums, just loud drummers."
"Thinner shells, shorter shells, thinner heads, will be able to produce a resonant tone when struck softer. There is less mass in a thinner shell and thinner head, which requires less energy to get it vibrating. A shorter shell depth means it takes less time for the sound waves and air to bounce from the top head down to the bottom head and back to the top head, etc. The top and bottom heads vibrating up and down in phase with each other helps create resonance/sustain in the tone of the drum. This resonance will never be as loud as the initial attack, but it allows the drummer to hear his drums when stuck more softly and also produces that infrasonic bodily feedback. The drums also happen to sound a lot better in the FOH when tuned this way."

With that in mind....I'll still beat the ever lovin' hell outta mine! That's how my boys like it.lonewolf wrote:An email from a drum "expert":sstuckey wrote:They're drums Jeff...they were intended to be loud. Yep, I was going to mention that you found your niche and are loving it. Most drummers aren't in that situation. As you know, doing the cover thing is completely different and the A Number One problem for bands in those clubs is "Turn it down!"sstuckey wrote:With that in mind....I'll still beat the ever lovin' hell outta mine! Yes...2:00 pm at Ford Music Store, but we'll be there for a while for late comers. I can PM you my phone number if you want to call before you come.
Tuning, Pounding and dynamic finesse (volume control) might be a good topic for Sunday.
To degree, shell material (acrylic, birch, maple, oak, etc.) and head choices have some effect on volume. Those things also have an effect of tone. One usually buys a kit for tone, sustain and resonance. Same with heads.
I could get into tuning relative to head selection, tom mounting and pitch of batter (top) head and reso (bottom) head, but a verbal discussion would be easier than typing it out.
The bottom line is that dynamics are in the hands of the drummer, they're called sticks...

INTERESTINGLY enough (or not) but Triple Threat is going to do some material unplugged tonight. The drummer will use hand drums (although probably miced) , bongos an congas and brushes on a snare drum. I'm excited to try this with Don and Bill and any feed back would be appreciated - yes, that's a shameless plug to stop into Pelleys TONIGHT 5/17 at 9:00.

I still have your number; should I bring those Sabain hats you wanted to look at? I probably won't be there until almost 3, hopefully I won't miss much.Hawk wrote: To Craven Sound:
