Domain name scam - Domain Registry of America.

Post by JayBird »

If anyone receives a letter to renew a website through "Domain Registry of America" disregard the notice - it's a SCAM. Lost Ledny found out the hard way after paying the $25 renewal fee only to have their site shut down. After further investigation and after emailing copies of the cashed check, I was notified that this so called company, that I paid, has been banned from business practices in the United States by the Federal Trade Commission. They are now working out of the UK and Europe...somehow cashing checks in Buffalo, NY and keeping a Buffalo, NY mailing address. Visit www.nameroute.com for a press release.

Thanks for the notification Jaybird.
I know all too well what it's like being scammed out of a domain name. Unfortunately I have no recourse. Hopefully you do.

Ron, I just made a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. They couldn't really do anything but take my statement. I also took the FAR stab at calling the Domain Reg. of America. They aren't to be practicing in the USA, but yet they have a Buffalo, NY address...puzzling. Right now I don't know who is real or who isn't, who I"m actually paying, etc. Anyway, the DROA actually answered the phone. They told me that I contacted them saying not to transfer our domain to their company...very confusing. My reply to them - Then why did you cash my check if I quote, told you not to transfer the domain name. Wouldn't it be proof enough that we wanted everything transfered by me sending the $25 check?! I have proof through my online banking account that the check was cashed on October 22, 2004. That shut him up and he told me that a refund check would be sent to me ASAP. Now I wait and see!

Wow, I've had several notices from them. I just threw them away because 1) it just didn't seem right and 2) I knew that they were not who I am renting our domain from.

Damn, I'm sorry you got hosed!!
