Priests take a vow of celibecy, which believe it or not, includes whippin' the willie. It would be that same as having sex according to their vows.

What I despise about the whole ordeal is that when pedifile priests are caught, the church usually just sends them to another area. God's witness protection program. I wonder what the church would do if they caught a priest fooling around with women in the congregation?

You guys get some really good conversations going here!

The Pope is the "Visible Head of Christ" and when he speaks it is the "literal voice of Jesus speaking". That's why he is what he is according to the Catholic Catechism and when said like it is actually written you instantly see how ridiculous that statement is and understand why few people repeat it today outside the Church. It is also written in the same breath that the Pope is the only way to Heaven, those who don't go through the Pope are lost sinners. Now today that has lost it's merit and Catholicism tries to ignore it was ever said or downplay it as being said in the 1500's and not really true for our times, but it was a Pope who said it then and being the literal voice of Christ at the time... well you can see how the entire system begins to fall apart. Also, until the Pope dies he is still the Pope, but yet there is a successor waiting in the wings... so is there two "heads of Christ" at all times or when is the magic moment when Christ's head jumps from one body to next??? I am curious to see how this all plays out if the Pope is unable to perform his duties while still living will they appoint someone else??? I guess when these laws were written they never fathomed medical technology that could keep a person alive with no function... sorry but the REAL head of Christ would have seen that one coming.

As for the forbiding of marriage and meats the New Testament clearly says that is of "doctrines of devils". So how does the Bible say one thing and the Church ends up teaching the exact opposite at the same time claiming to be the one and only "true" Christian Church???

Celibacy does include jerking off as well as women, but it doesn't cover messing around with little boys. That is why priest molestation has become what it is, because in the vast array of twisted rules and logic it is not a sin to mess around with little boys... only yourself and women. And the actions of the Church to move Priests around and cover up their molestations further shows how it is not viewed as a sin or a crime... if it was then they would be kicked out of the Priesthood. Many have been dismissed for much less. Maybe this is why the Bible said not to forbid marriage, because unlike the Church Jesus could actually see the end result of such laws.

The biggest misinterpretation of the Bible given by any one religion is that of "Peter being the rock". You see what you are told, and when a verse is pulled out of it's context and used alone to drill an idea into the heads of the masses you can put any spin on it. Within it's context the rock is Jesus, not Peter! The rest of the NT describes a new Church and a spiritual one at that. The people that believe in Christ are the Church, not a building. The people of the Old Testament corrupted the House of God so badly that only the "elite" could enter God's Temple among many other things. So the only way to have the Church stay uncorrupted was to take it out of the hands of man... if man can't touch it, man can't ruin it. You don't need a building, you don't need to confess your sins to a mediator, you don't need a mediator to talk to God. Jesus is the ONLY mediator between man and God... that was the entire point of his existence and the constant appointment of man to be exactly that under minds everything that Jesus is and did.

i have several questions: if the pope has a nocturnal emission, to whom does he confess? or does he just change the sheets, throw them in the laundry w/ a wet rag & hope no one notices. and what kind of sheets does the pope have? do you think they're silky? or does he sleep on a bed of thorns? and what does he wear to bed? do you think he sleeps naked? is he allowed to sleep naked? or is that sinful? what else isnt the pope allowed to do? do you think he puts the lid back on the toothpaste? do you think he pees sitting down? do you think he ever masturbated in his life? do you think thats a question they ask in the papal interview? have you ever masturbated? what about before he knew he was going to be pope...like when he was 12? does that count? if you think about it, the pope's job is probably the worst job in the world...even worse than a honey dipper. hmmmmm....

And while we are on the subject I will gladly give my opinion ( not that anyone asked ). The Catholic Church is not necessarily Gods rules but the rules of some people who felt they were smart enough to tell everyone what to do. If you are Catholic open your eyes and change religions already.

( I'll probably take a beating for this post )

You may but I'll be the first to back you on this. If you look at the history of the Catholic church, you see a history run by an incessant want of money and a history full of repression, especially as it pertains to females. All in the name of God.

all organized religion is a primitive means of controlling the masses by the fear of 'what if.' its odd that modern man laughs at the acient romans & greeks for having their gods, and thought the mayans were kooky for sacrificing virgin and its kinda funny that grown men believe in purgatory, heaven & hell, but not in santa claus....so you'd better be good for goodness sakes!

this is amazing me how many responses there are to this post! and if truth be told, I and my whole family on my fathers side were and are native american indians, I have cousins still living on reservations in upper michigan, so our religion and beliefs are so totally different than any discussed in this post, the greeks and romans really may have been on to something as far as I am concerned I know nothing about being catholic or any other way than what I have been taught. I did not even know what lent was until about two years ago and I knew easter was all about the easter bunny, I truly had no clue that it had anything to do with a religion, I do not cut people down or begrudge them for what they have been taught, it just seems to me that somewhere in the bible it should say do not touch or fondle a little boys penis or worse! I do not even know all of the 10 commandments I just know there are ten, and one of them should kinda cover that area somewhere, don't ya think? maybe there should be a bible for dummies given to all the priests that breaks it down a little better in easier terms????? you know, common sense things like, if you are not allowed to touch your own genitalia, someone elses is out of the question too, no matter what age or sex they are!

You're funny as hell !!!!!!!!

Actually I think that should kinda go without saying, do you actually have to be told not to do this ?!?!?!?

But hey I guess if its not in the priests handbook its OK.

Sorry, I forgot... homosexuality is not allowed either.

lol, that's just it... the instruction to confess is "one to another", but it has been turned into people confessing to a Priest. They should be confessing back, but they don't. And you bring up another point... Jesus was the only perfect man, but the Pope and Priests as well are raised up so high as if they are without sin.
it just seems to me that somewhere in the bible it should say do not touch or fondle a little boys penis or worse! I do not even know all of the 10 commandments I just know there are ten, and one of them should kinda cover that area somewhere, don't ya think?
"Thou shalt not commit adultery." That combined with an endless number of definitions of marriage and sex... between a man and a women. Also, "Thou shalt not covet (desire) thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy nieghbors wife... nor ANYTHING that is thy neighbors". Anything would definatley include a neighbors children. It is very much covered. :)

There it is! the "M" word......MONEY!
was it not the Romans who hunted Jesus down and crucified him? and now the biggest form of organized religion in the world is ROMAN catholic? it's like the Romans were like, "well, this Christianity thing is still perty big even after we crucified their saviour, so, how 'bout we just organize it for them and keep Rome as the center of the universe. Oh, and we will build it on all of their money." It just seems wierd to me. I was brought up catholic, went to catholic school and the whole deal. After all of that I still had to go out and find God on my own.

Maybe that's it with "organized" religion. I feel that there is no organized way to make someone understand how God IS there. I have not been to church for a long time, (prevented mostly by late Saturday nights), but I will say that I DO think it is a good foundation to raise your children on, no matter what kind of service you attend.

My mother, who is not even catholic, told me "well, you were "confirmed" when you were in school to live life as a catholic."
Yeah, confirmation, when I was 12 yrs old. what the hell did I know about the world at that age, except that nuns seemed to hate me because I was my own little person. My dad was the catholic one, and their rules state, that if one parent is catholic, the children MUST be brought up in the catholic church, where it is a sin if you do not attend YOUR church every Sunday. It is like they try to scare you into staying. Dad even stopped going there and went somewhere else.

I have been to some other churches and the one thing I like to see, is people just praising God in even the simplest of ways. No religion is any better than the next. Catholicism is just the most f*cked up. I have read some of Budda's words and find them to be quite inspiring. There are many paths to take and choices to make on this planet. I have found that it is better to just live with the greater good in mind. And if you wanna worship a piece of cheese, and it makes you a better person, then, as they say it, Behold the power of Cheese!
But seriously, as Bill Maher put it: " I don't care what religion you fancy, what it all boils down to is that Jesus Christ was a man that walked this earth 2000 years ago, can you think of a better role model for your children?"

I'm done for now.
Praise the Lord!

Only 4% of priests commit these disgusting acts. That's 2% LESS than the number of people in everday society that commit same said acts.
C'mon, you have got to be kidding...everyone knows that number is MUCH higher because those are REPORTED cases. Most cases are never reported. Not some, but most. And, in fact, because of the intimidation factor that a priest has anyway, I bet more cases of priest molestation go unreported than cases in everyday society.

how is fish not meat? vegeterians dont eat fish
1. Fasting on Fridays does not mean 'eat fish'. It means do not eat meat, and there are many dishes without meat OR fish if you really think fish is meat, even though it's not.
2. Having a face does not make a food meat. If an animal itself is a carnivore the animal's muscle that you eat is MEAT. Generally, fish are not carnivores. Although that does make me curious why poultry is also supposedly off limits during lent, because poultry is not technically meat.
3. Many vegetarians do eat fish, they are called Pesco-Vegetarians. And it is this dietitian's opinion that vegetarianism is a very healthy diet, but the optimal vegetarian diet is one that includes fish, eggs, and dairy because of the unique and excellent nutrients that these foods provide.

Sorry, I'm at work so I thought this rant would count as work?

Your opening up a whole can of worms with the vegetarian subject.....hmmmm.....what is meat? yes there are different types of vegetarions..those who are against the killing and consuming of animals, those who do it for health reasons, and those who just dont like the taste of meat.As far as what exactly is meat, this can get just as complicated as religion, actually a lot of the food controversy is based on religion. Some religions find some animals sacred, some evil, etc. Zappaswife brought up the carnivor thing . I dissagree with that theory, there are many fish that are carnivoris such as sharks and pirahnas and so on , not only that dont forget that cows and chickens are both vegetarians and are considered meat. What i dont understand is what makes it right to eat a tuna but not a chicken? is it more cruel to kill a chicken than a tuna?? think about it. As far as health reasons well whats healthy seems to change everyday, lowfat....no! lo-calorie!!....no! lo-carb!..maybe....the problem is people forgot that there is millions of natural choices in this world ...instead they choose the drive through and the microwave, do you ever read the ingredients? holy crap! these are the people that cant figure out why they cant lose weight its because they have ten years worth of garbage and chemicals inside of them! ok im on a tangent but you get my point. ther was also a study stating that tests were done on hundreds of plants and that plants experience pain and sensation just like animals they just cant scream! so lets just starve ourselves to death and let the world go on in peace without us insane creatures, thats the problem with humans, our brains, we think to much therefore we tend to get in over our heads constantly. animals however are very balanced, take what they need and are smart enough to realize theres enough in nature to satisfy with going through the drivethru. the only reason they were created is that were so busy going to work to create more crap that we dont need we dont have time to look for our own food. if we were dropped off in the middle of the woods, would we know whats edible?people think that animals are so dumb but were the ones sucking the earth dry like a leech and wonder whats wrong with the weather and why are we sick all the time..daaaaa

Who needs a pope when we have a president who talks and listens to God?

"God told me to strike at al Qaeda and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them."

Hey ZW, I can't think of a fish that humans eat that isn't carnivorous, but I consider a fish that eats other fish as a carnivore.

If its a animal its meat. A cow is not carnivore but I and everyone else in the world consider beef as meat. You have to kill it before you grill.

Two movies I reccomend. SAVED and DOGMA.
SAVED pokes fun at the christian religion while bringing around the point that, "though we are all different, we are the same." Gay, straight, pregnant and un married, crippled, geek, leader...we're no better than the next person.
DOGMA comes up with a great point. "No religion has *ever* gotten it right. It is better to have an *idea* than to have a faith system set up on the grounds of falsehood"...something to that effect.
watch them both. and let me know.

as for me. i know there is a God. i know that He/She wants us to do our best. I don't see myself in hell because i was not in a building for an hour. i don't see it for eating meat on 1 day and not having eaten it on the other 6. i'm trying my damndest to do my best in this world, and either He accepts it or does He really want me then.

Oh man, that movie was great. And it reintroduced the world to the brillance that is Macully Caulken.

Dogma was awesome too. Though, I would have liked to have seen more action from Jay and Silent Bob. Alanis Morrisette can be my goddess any time she wants.

I'm not a theologian, nor do I pretend to be. But if God is going to toss me into hell for those kinds of things, he has some really fucked up priorities. Besides, I don't ever recall Jesus saying that you have to go to church every Sunday. Actually, he seemd to be pretty much opposed to the pharisees and everything they stood for (and if he were to come back today, I highly doubt he would be digging what the church is doing now).

I've got to agree wholeheartedly with the Herald on this one.

Religion was simply a tool for the first humans to become civilized. In order to maintain a civilized society, rules are needed.

How do you make uncivilized humans conform to the basic laws of society? You tell them that if they break the rules, a god or gods will strike them down, or that they will go to hell or some other terrible place for eternity.

How do you keep some guy from marrying his camel? You tell him that God decrees that marriage is between a man and a woman.

They are just simple rules that organized religions have manipulated and twisted to benefit themselves. Don't forget that during the middle ages, the popes were murderous tyrants, yet the Catholic church still considers them as noble because they rid Europe of so-called barbarians and heathens.

Do you think it's wrong to eat a bite of chicken & a bite of hard boiled egg at the same time? Like in a salad. To me it just seems wrong. Or what about drinking a glass of milk with your hamburger? Did you know that 1 hamburger can contain the meat of up to 100 cows? This has nothing to do with religion, just a thought for the day.

What if Mike Tyson ate (bit off & swallowed) someone's ear on a Friday during Lent? Does it count if there was no intention involved in the eating of meat (i.e. a 3rd degree violation?) Or, does it not count if the donator of the meat is still alive?
