"Get the glamour out of your eyes boy..."

Post by GUITARII »

"Get the glamour out of your eyes boy.... you'll never make it around here!"

These were the words spoken to a very good musician from our area many years ago from someone very near and dear to my heart who is also a musician from the area going way back... Now the guy these words were spoken to is doing very well in our area but I often wonder, had these words never been spoken would things be better or worse for this guy? Something like this can tear you down quick or give you the drive to do it all....

But I've been curious.... how many musicians in the immediate area, 100 mile radius, have made it or gotten close enough to sink their teeth into it for a short while?

Songsmith always has some pretty cool tales... The Hurricanes have played with some pretty big names... Mark Middleton was there playing with all the big names in the 80's, and making it big I remember reading an article in Guitar magazine or something where Vernon Reid from Living Color was quoted as saying something along the lines of "you want to hear someone play guitar, there's a white boy from Pennsylvania by the name of Mark Middleton that knows how to play guitar" or something like that..... and there isn't a song today that you can think of that he can't play if he heard it at least once... and I'm sure if you hummed it, he'd play it!!

So... who else has been there?

I know of several locals that have achieved national and international acclaim for their work:

DC Cooper, Bedford (Royal Hunt, solo work, and Silent Force)
Brad Divens, McConnelsburg (Wrathchild and Souls at Zero, now producer/engineer)
Nick Catanese, Pittsburgh (Black Label Society)
??? (can't remember his name), from Everett played guitar in Scandal
Mark Middleton - Raging Slab (see previous post)

Probably many have had brushes with success. Here are a couple that I know of:

Todd Giornesto was to be the next singer for Iced Earth (unfortunately, it never happened)
Nitro (State College) had an album released on a semi-major label.
Mark Panek - not sure, but I think he appeared on a couple of major label releases ??

I know Stept On got really close to signing a deal. Then of course you have the list of PA. musicians that have but it's not really specific to this area:
Poison started out here but moved to CA. to make it
Fuel
Live
Breaking Benjamin
I have heard that Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) originally is from Mechanicsburg area but, that is really unconfirmed
I heard that Cinderella was from PA. but on VH1 they said differently.

The Badlees and The Clarks got pretty big too. Rusted Root I believe also was from the area (unconfirmed again).

When I was in Martyrdom, we played with a bunch of signed metal bands and a few major label metal acts. We had some talk with labels and had a tour set up but, at that point I had to pull out (family).

As far as local guys, I'm not really sure other than Stept On.

Pumpkinhead is right, We ( Stept On at the time ) were very close to signing a deal.. but , close don't count. It was fun while it lasted, and we were able to see alot of things, meet alot of great people and learn alot from our mistakes. All in all, it was 6 years well spent ! I would not trade it for anything !

Don't forget John McKnight. Since he relocated to Atlanta several years ago, he has worked with a number of big names in the studio, including .38 Special, Hughie Thomasson (ex-Outlaws, now with Lynyrd Skynyrd), Derek Trucks, and more.

John Fleming's current band, Drugmoney, was featured in Spin magazine last year.

In one of the earliest cases of a local musician making it big, Altoona's Thom Mooney played drums with Todd Rundgren and The Nazz in the late 60's, and worked with Bob Welch, David Werner and more.

I don't know about all of them, but Ronnie Roseman from The Shondells is from PA.

One of the Insync guys is suppose to be from around Clarion... if you can consider that making it.

The Vogues are from Pittsburgh. I got to sit in on their recording sessions when I lived in a studio down there. They were like world famous in the 60's-ish. You might not know who they are, but your grandma would! Your parents might, too. You have definitley heard some of their songs.

Nobody has mentioned those other Pittsburgh guys, like Joe Grushecky, I think he had a little Major label success. I'm not sure about what level Norman Nardini has gotten to.

Good to see that 313 mentioned Nick Catanese. When Red Dawg and I had Stix and Stones, we played some gigs with him before and after he was with Zakk, with his Pittsburgh band High Voltage, which changed their name to Thread. I remember him telling us about having correspondance with Zakk, then the next thing you know he was touring with Black Label Society, doing a movie with Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, and hanging out in Hollywood. It has been a long time since I had heard anything about him, and then last month, I opened up a guitar magazine, I forget which one, and there was his picture on a full page ad endorsing Washburn.
and since I mentioned it, I don't know if anybody remembers Stix and Stones, but we had a deal basically on the table from an independent, with a gold record sitting on reels, but just couldn't hold it together to put out the album. Plus some people could not keep their paws off of other people's women, but not Red and I. We just couldn't keep from fighting!
We did get to open for Fuel, Everclear, and Jackyl. (locally)

Now, I don't wanna toot my horn, but I am gonna, just this once  because not very many bands could or will ever hold a candle to the power and tightness that Stix and Stones had when playing songs from that era. Bold statement, yes, but ask around. As cool (or hot) as it was, though, it was just never meant to be. I will also take this opportunity to mention the other bands that I thought were as killer and that I looked up to at that time and now: Wrench/Stept On (I have yet to see IN), I-Enemy, Wake Up Screaming, and Creep (Pittsburgh). If this thread stays alive, I'll add any more that come to mind.

Wow thats something to see some of those bands from out of Pa. But there is one that really stands out for me and that was at one time the local band called I-Enemy. They were awesome. I first started out playing guitar in bands for many many years. The singer for my band at the time was named Rob Aresta. Rob and Eric were really close friends. We got to open for them at a small party at Robs one night. It was one of the best time's I had ever had. But there was something about Eric that made me wanna become a singer more than anything. He had the voice that just diden't quit. A voice so stong. I would go to I-Enemy shows and just watch those guys jam there ass's off. Eric always new how to get the crowd going. After month's of going out and watching I-Enemy play. I was Influenced by Eric so much I no longer had a will to play guitar any longer. I new I wanted to sing for a band. I've no been singin for about 10 yrs now. I woulden't give it up for nothing. I would like to thank Eric were ever he is for motivating me enough to do what I have always wanted to do. Even If he never knew that he had that big of an impact on me I would like him to no that he is the reason why I am a singer today.

Their singer (Firehouse) is from Lock Haven - I think the rest of the band is not from PA though.

Perhaps someone can help with this one, but there was a band from Philipsburg in the 70s that had an album released nationally. I'm thinking they were called the Stabilizers or Regulators - something like that?

How about Johnstown's kings of death metal Incantation.

These guys are on Olympic Records (Century Media's death metal branch) and have been on 5 different labels, have 7 or 8 albums out, have done at least 4 world tours, and are globally considered as one of the original death metal bands.

I know Necrotomie played with some bigger bands, like Death and Incantation.

Back in the early and mid 90's I played guitar for Ask a Stranger. We were from Clarion. We had a CD out called Stranger Things Have Happened. It sold real well all over western PA. We outsold Heart and GnR 4 months in a row through National Record Mart. We got some attention nationally and did a scad of radio interviews and such. WDVE played our song, Eve of Destruction. Michael Stipe and Martha Quinn both dug our CD. We were signed to a management deal with a company called Goode Music. They handled The Rainmakers and The Jets. It was pretty cool. We signed our contracts in a law office at the top of the US Steel building in Pittsburgh. We were slated to go out and open for Aerosmith and Tesla. Then, just like that they called one day and said "We won't be needing your services. Sorry". They claimed that country music was the next big thing and that they needed to clear their roster of rock acts to make room for the C&W boys and girls. We did do a bunch of opening slots for has been acts like Molly Hatchet, The Byrds, Buster Poindexter, Head East, Dr. Hook and Savoy Brown. We also headlined some shows at big outdoor gigs. The most important thing to realize is that every band is a local band somewhere and honest to God, central or western PA really could be the next Seattle.

Trent Reznor went to high school in Mercer and college at Allegheny in Meadville.
Chris Vrenna, drummer for NIN is from Erie as is the singer from Train.
The drummer for Matchbox 20 grew up in Pittsburgh.

What does Mark Middleton do now? I always thought he was a hell of a player.

Mark is still playing in the Area... Johnstown mostly with the "Desperado's" it's a 3 piece. I haven't been out to see him in a long time but I always try to think of a song that I haven't heard of in forever and a day to challenge him with.... he hasn't let me down yet! :D

I believe that The Juliana Theory is from Greensburg....they have a major label deal, and I saw their disc reviewed in Rolling Stone a few months back (unfortunately it was panned)

Chris Kirkpatrick from N'Sync is from Clarion (my hometown's big claim to fame), I have actually seen him many times and talked to him in a dive bar he frequents when in town (Dew Drop Inn - excellent wings)...i dropped him a Third Standard Cd that he probably dropped in the trash, along with his shitty career, as he went out the door. He has put on about 40 lbs. and he was whining about Timberlake having all of his songs handed to him by the label...true story!!

I also believe that The Skyliners, an oldies band famous for Since I Don't Have You which GNR covered on the Spaghetti Incident are from Pittsburgh, but I could be mistaken

This is a great scene...but we need a good local rock band to break big and build the scene up....

Here is another Johnstown, PA musician who went on to bigger things.

Kevin Salem

Once named one of the "best songwriters of the year" by Rolling Stone magazine, singer/songwriter Kevin Salem has also produced other artist's records (Giant Sand, Chocolate Genius) in addition to issuing his own. Salem released a pair of albums for Roadrunner Records (a record company usually associated with heavy metal) in the mid-'90s, 1994's Soma City and 1996's Glimmer, but kept putting off the release date of his projected third release -- Salem has claimed that a different version of the album has been completed and shelved each year since the release of Glimmer because none were up to par. 2001 finally saw the release of the much-delayed album, entitled Ecstatic, his first for the Future Farmer label. The album featured cameos by a host of other artists, including the Bangles' Vicki Peterson, Donovan Leitch, Alice Temple, Barry Reynolds, Lydia Kavanaugh, and jazz keyboardist Rob Arthur. Kevin has also recorded with Dumptruck and some other groups as well as did TV soundtrack music for the PBS show Nova.
