Jam Hall

Post by Lowender »

When I was in the service, they had this place in San Antonio (name escapes me, was 20 yrs ago) where musicians could go play, hang out, socialize etc. I tried taking up the guitar back then until an injury sidelined my military career, but its what got me interested in playing music all those years ago. A ton of guys and gals from lackland afb would go to this place and play. is there anything like that in the Johnstown area? They made their money off of rentals etc, ie recording equipment, if you wanted to use the big pa system etc, it cost like 4$ an hour etc. They asked for a donation for every visit, but it wasn't mandatory, but was very cool if you gave. They also has live shows for the community etc, the people who played there and formed bands etc played these pro bono to give back etc. It was a very cool experience :-) It would be nice if there was something like this in the community , especially for a noob like myself :-)

When I was there, it was called The Chaparral. They also had a rock DJ who played AC/DC when it was all about disco, and bands at 2 in the afternoon. I used to go see a band there called Hot To Go, who worked the military-base circuit in the South ofr years. They were mostly Southern rock when I saw them, but when my brother was in the Army a few years later, they had switched to hard rock/metal.
Great memories of the jam room... nobody knew anybody, you picked up a guitar and just played with total strangers. Very cool for a PA farmboy who'd never been out of PA before.
