Believe it or not... Looking to start a Polka Band !

Post by Hawk »

I have several irons in several fires but I'm looking for one more fire, a Polka Band !

Nope, not a metal polka band, not a blues polka band, not a punk polka band, not a progressive polka band and not even a jazz polka band.

I grew up listening to Polkas LIVE at the Bavarian Hall and the Unter Uns and many weddings. If the polka is done right it is a joyous music. Done right means all acoustic instruments, Trumpets, Saxes, Trombones, Tuba, Accordion, Drums. (Not an electric guitar and electric bass strumming "Roll Out the Barrel".)

After you stop  help me spread the word to musicians you know who play said instruments. Thanks !

I don't have much to offer here but I really hope this goes somewhere. A local polka group could stay busy all summer long with fairs and festivals. I know an accordian player so I'll pass the word.

If you can get it goin you'll probably be one of the busiest bands on this site. Good luck and have fun.

Claire's in Ashville used to have a polka night with live music- perhaps you might find some players here if they still do it. I have a friend that plays accordion- I'll see if he wants to play and get him your info if he does.

hey, this is a great idea! I can't really help you out as my high school trumpet is unplayable, but I hope you can get something put together, there aren't enough polka bands around here...actually, I'm not sure there are any, are there?
Best of luck, Hawk!

Good luck, hawk!

Once you get that band rolling then definitely let me know!

How about some Psychedelic Polka?

Try posting on State College craigslist. They always have horn players available.
Keep on keepin' on,

Bill, if you're doing a polka band, then there will be no excuse whatsoever not to toss in some Wierd Al Yankovic covers.

Bill, I'd love to do this once in awhile. And you know what? I played trumpet for 7 years - Maybe I could get my lip back!

I'm a huge fan of Brave Combo who do polkas in every imaginable style. I might be interested in playing bass for something like that...

I have almost 45 years of continuous bass experience; acoustic and electric.. currently working with Natasha and the Spy Boys in SC and The Duke Morrison trio in Huntingdon and a few other side projects but I make time for what I like.

Good luck.

If you are interested in Polkas, check out the many Polka bands and shows around here:

Polkafest June 1-3 http://www.visitjohnstownpa.com/polkafest/
Jimmy Sturr - playing at Windber Arcadia July 20
Johnstown Button Box Club
Jerry Intahar
Rosie and the Jammers
Rhinelanders

My band still plays polkas. However, we are by no means a polka band because of our 2 polkas per gig limit.
