The Beast that is Priest!

Post by Jim Price »

I just listened to the new Judas Priest album, Angel of Retribution, for the first time. DAMN!!!

My initial impressions...It's great to hear Rob Halford wailing like before. He sounds like he never left! It's also great to hear Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing cranking out dual leads again. Priest goes retro here, a lot of this sounds like a throwback to the darker-toned Sad Wings Of Destiny/Sin After Sin/Stained Class period of the group's career - especially "Worth Fighting For," "Angel" and the 13-minute-plus "Lochness." I have yet to watch the DVD part of this (I bought the DualDisc version), I'll get to that soon.

I'll have to listen to this a few more times to see how it sinks in, but at least after the first listen, I'm definitely liking!

Has anyone else listened to this yet? Whaddya think?

Jim,

I don't know if you got to the DVD or not, but Rob is clearly having problems getting it done live. Just as I feared, his high end is gone just as it was when I saw Halford open up for Maiden at PPGP a few years ago.

I like the CD, but just as a friend of mine said, it isn't anything we haven't already heard before. Nothing groundbreaking and after a few listens it's kind of boring.

It was the triple bill a few years back at the Starlake/PPGP, where Halford went on first, then Queensryche, then Iron Maiden. Awesome show!

Heck, could've fooled me, I thought his high end was sounding pretty damn good that night.
