Question

Post by Imgrimm01 »

this may sound to some as though I'm being funny BUT I'm dead serious. Not being catholic and for that matter not believing in organized religion I don't get what /who the pope is, I mean I'm familiar with ole J.C. and his mom etc.. BUT what makes the pope special? Is he some kind of great high middle man? What qualifies him for this honor? Does the BIG MAN really need a middle man? I thought we were to be 1 with our creator, I think I would bypass the pope if it were me, I mean why talk to the jester if you can get to the king? I'm sorry he's sick but does it need to be a headline every 2 minutes on every network? Help me know better. Thank You
I'm glad I didn't have to fight in a war, I'm glad I didn't get killed or kill somebody, I hope my kids enjoy the same lack of manhood

The pope is basically the appointed head of the Catholic church. Today he is viewed as little more than a figurehead, though the position does have quite a bit of power through diplomacy. It's hard to say no to the head of the largest and richest organized religious group in the world. I believe he even once got a Texas inmate spared from death row.

I think that most Catholics (I'm not one) view the pope as a leader and compass of morality. He also keeps the bullet-proof bubble-mobile and giant hat industries in business.
... and then the wheel fell off.

I thought the actual Pope died years ago, and they just used his skin to cover over a robotic likeness of him?

15 yr old virgin #1 is hard to find, and not to mention against the law, but hey, maybe the priests would keep their hands off the 12 yr old boys if they got the ok from the big man to "bust a nut" with a woman for once! wanna eat fish on friday, grab some cash from the offering and eat a hooker and leave the little ones alone!

Back in the day when the great JC walked the earth...
He knew he was going to be offed soon (Judas was to hand him over soon) so he took Peter aside and appointed him the first pope. "You are the rock on which my church will be founded..." He's the foundation and cornerstone of the Catholic Church.
Since then, we have appointed one man to be the head of the church. The one we look to. They have ranged from aged men to a 12 year old boy (I believe he was the youngest one). They retain the position until death. I believe they can be removed from power if they have been abusing it, but I'm not quite 100% sure.

This is something that seperates Catholicism from other religions. Some don't follow the pope. Some have female priests.

Anyways...he's a good man who is right up there with Mother Theresa...that's why he's on tv too.
Is that any help?

I am not Catholic, nor am I trying to defend anyone really.....but the whole molestation thing is blown WAY out of proportion! I think that 1 case is too many, obviously, but the priest molestation thing is an example of a few bad apples spoiling the image of the whole bunch. Only 4% of priests commit these disgusting acts. That's 2% LESS than the number of people in everday society that commit same said acts. As I said, I am not trying to be an advocate for anyone, but I just think it's unfair to lump all member of one group of people who have an offender rate less than everyday society. Look at your fellow man first.

A priest and a rabi decide to combine summer camps on an island to save money. On their way across the water, the boat catches fire. The rabi jumps off the boat and starts to swim. The priest screams "What about the children"

The rabi replies "F*ck the children"

The priest screams "Do you think we have time?"

Sorry, might catch some flack for that but I couldn't resist.

Grimm: I have no idea why we would need a middle man either. Never looked at it that way. I'm Catholic, but don't practice anything but bass and shooting bow, but I think it's riduculus as well that
1. The pope can't even lift his head, how is he responsible for a religion.

2. A 12 YEAR OLD POPE??? What possibly could he have done?

3. Let the priest's get married for God's sake. What's the big deal?

4. I just don't get not eating meat on Friday. I know it's for "fasting," but when I get to that gate, if the determining factor of if I get into heaven or not comes down to that turkey sandwich I ate on March 4, 2004, I'm going to shit myself.

Have a good friday everyone. Be safe and Perform well!

Are you f*cking kidding me? I'd think part of the criteria for becoming a priest is that you not molest children. I could be wrong, but they should probably put that on the job application somewhere.

Sorry, but four percent is pretty damn high, considering the demographic. And the reports continue to come out, even locally, as recently as two weeks ago. It's sickening and shameful, especially for someone in an authority position (preist, policeman, doctor, etc.).

I agree with the comment given earlier about letting them get married. They gotta bust a nut somewhere, might as well be their in wives instead of little Billy.

amen! I don't care if it's 1%, I am not saying the religion molested the boys, I am saying the priest who took the oath needs to be screened a little better somehow and I think the church should stop trying to cover their asses and hide the fact that it has happened. I am sure the boys will disagree that it only happened to them, if a priest has been a priest for 25 years how many others over the years have complained and been told to keep quiet? what the hell ever happened to jerkin off? afraid to get their hands dirty, so what the hell get your dick dirty instead! how sad that these kids and some adults have to live with this for the rest of their lives and the priest gets moved to a new church instead of going to jail. how many priests are going to be moved and registered as a sex offender? 0%

Once a pope is chosen, he's in for life. So don't look for the Vatican to replace John Paul II; he remains the pope until he passes away.

The Pope is the recognized head of the Catholic Church, and still gives rulings on issues affecting the Church. The Pope is more a figurehead these days, but back in the Middle Ages, the Pope was quite a powerful position and wielded a lot of authority.

I think John Paul II will exit as one of the more popular popes. He gave hope to the people of his own homeland, Poland, when they were struggling to become a free society apart from the Iron Curtain. And how many people can you recall who publicly forgave somebody who tried to assassinate them? Pope John Paul II did.

I think the Pope's health is getting a lot of press, because with his health as frail as it is, nobody knows if his next hospital visit will be his final one. At least I'd rather hear the Pope getting the news coverage than Martha Stewart!

It doesn't matter if it's 4%, 2%, or .5%. A priest takes an oath to GOD. When he does this, he betrays everything that he stands for, basically turns families (that his damn idiocy hurt) against organized religion, and should be put in jail to get his ass raped.

It's not blown way out of proportion. Last I heard, there were 10's of thousands of cases of molestation. Add to that the families of that and you can multiply the number of people hurt by 3 on average.
If youth knew; if age could.

Bobby.... While born and raised catholic... and raising my children in a catholic environment, school, etc.... I too have asked myself a lot of these questions over the years and is probably the reason I do not practice the faith as I was raised to.

The Pope, Priests and such are a direct reflection of the old testament. In that time, Abraham was the only link that the people had with God... he was in fact the father of the people... all over at that time (7 nations and such). Now here's the rub.... Jesus enters the picture and the New Testament "Era" begins. Jesus, the son of God, brought to us in the likeness of man, to create a direct link from the people to God himself... virtually eliminating the need for the middle man... I can pray or speak directly to the big guy as well as anyone else can.

Now, this is where "man" puts the screws to it. Call it a folklore process if you will. Catholicism can't define whether or not we as catholics should live strickly by the old or new testaments. Out of respect for the old... we remain separated from God by communicating through a priest or middle man... confessions for example. But, we still recognize through the new testament that we can communicate with God directly or through the saints.... Jesus, etc.... This is where all of my issues begin because I feel that I don't need to go through anyone but the Father, Son and Holy Ghost... which are one in the same anyhow. I may not be the most religious person.... I know I'm not but I do believe in God... It's like the song "Heaven"

"I don't need no one to tell me about Heaven, I look at my daughters and I believe. I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth, I look at the sunset and I believe"

You can't deny the presence and marvel of a higher being when you look at your children.... I don't care who you are.

Justin... As far as eating meat on Friday's goes... it's another of the folklore processes brought about by catholicism. Back in the day, it was decided that we as catholics should sacrifice by fasting or doing without something that was hard to come by on a regular basis at that time.... meat. It was not something available for every meal like it is today. Fridays came about as the day during the lenten season because Christ bled and died on the cross for all of us on a Friday. It is tradition... which I think is odd now... Think about it, how hard is it to actually go without meat... any day of the week, any time of the year. It's really not. I think that if you want to sacrifice out of respect for JC's suffering and death... cool! It's great! But try doing without something that you can't imagine going without.... now it's not such an easy task is it.

It's like Jackson giving up sleep overs!

how is fish not meat? vegeterians dont eat fish... and fish have faces, so that makes them meat. i feel bad for the pope. i would hate to be in such declining health, and have a worldwide spotlight on me....with the church & media spinning & twisting it to sound like i'm fine. i never heard of an 80-something year old person having a trachaeotomy, either. i almost died when i heard the CBS reporter say 'it's strange that god would take the pope's voice away...' i wonder how many people complained about that one...actually most catholics probably dont watch liberal CBS, so maybe no one caught it. it seems like the church is keeping him alive for their own reasons. what happens if the pope slips into a coma for years (like the lady in florida?) what then? i wonder if the catholic church would revisit the right-to-die issue, if the pope was on a ventilator for 5 years...actually, no one would find out about it i bet. they'd just say he was resting comfortably somewhere. i think it stinks that you can euthanize your family pet, or a hardened criminal, but not your loving grandmother who's been in a vegetative state for years, at the emotional & financial expense of the family. okay, enough ranting..
happy friday everyone. :)
