Help!!

Post by Banned »

Been having problems with my rig and it seems to be getting worse!

Carvin R1000 III head, Carvin 410T cab

When I first turn it on the output from the speakers sounds "Farty" and distorted, like it's choking. I'll usually piss with it for awhile then after a little while and after really pushing it, it will make a "popping" noise, then everything sounds/works fine. Trying to figure out if it's the head or a speaker. The amp pushes 225w per channel into 8 ohms, or 700w bridged into 8 ohms. The cab is 4x10, 8 ohm cab rated at 800w.

It happens whether I run the head bridged or if I only run one side at 225w. (Happens with both sides) I've switched cables and still behaves the same way. If one speaker is "shitting the bed" will it effect the rest of the speakers in the cab??

Thanks!
Dan

After removing the grill, I did notice that one speaker has a crease in the cone. Not sure how it could have happened as the grill has never been off. Could this have anything to do with the problem??

I would definitely say the issue is in the head and not the cab. If there's an issue with a speaker, it generally doesn't get better unless you turn down rather than up. I'm not a tech, but IME "fartiness" is often some issue with the gain structure.

Regardless, it's a transistor amp, so aside from soldering a disconnected cable, cleaning the pots and jacks, or switching a pre tube (didn't some of the Redheads have pre tubes in them?) it's probably tech time if you want to get the amp running right.

Yeah the older series did but not the R1000 III.

And yes, Tonefight, That's the next order of business, Finding another head to try the cab with. I got on the Carvin forums and found several with similar problems that said dirt/oxidation in the effects loop jacks was the issue. Not sure how that would effect the output since I never use them anyway, but I'll give that a try as well as cleaning the contacts on the ribbon harness. (Crosses Fingers) Can you still buy contact cleaner?? Or is that another thing that has been discontinued due to screaming environmentalists?

I know the HITE Co still sells contact cleaner and I imagine you can get it at radio shak or something too, probably just doesn't work as good as it used too.
