No More Walmart Greeters

Our people greeters are already inside the store. Both stores that I've worked at (East Freedom, Altoona) have the greeters that way. Never seen greeters outside the store anywhere. Weird.

I think what they were trying to say was that instead of standing at the entrance and basically saying hello, they are "moving them into the store" to provide additional customer service in the departments.

I like the idea of greeters. It adds a tiny bit of humanity to the whole thing for me, and often employs people who would have trouble finding and maintaining other work. Now, we all know how I feel about mega-corps, and obviously they have ulterior motives like loss prevention and other security concerns, but I think they have a right to do that, and it seems win/win.

Personally I am glad to see them go when it comes to the small walmarts (ie the ones that are not supercenters) it definately makes it seem more home town and nice but most of the time especially at super centers its just annoying. Seriously and half the time they just stare at you without saying anything. Good Riddance

Well, yeah, but then a lot of them are doing this because they probably can't do much else in terms of work. I don't see most of the greeters at Altoona's Walmart working in furniture or anything like that

There are a number of retailers that have seen a steady growth in revenue and stores over the last decade and are taking quite a bite out ofWalmart's customer base.

Some of the national store chains that have seen a steady increase in business are Big Lots / Odd Lots, Aldi's, T. J. Maxx / Marshall's, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar and 99 Cents Only Stores.

Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar and 99 Cents Only Stores are expanding rapidly - so much so, a recent report by Colliers International found, that there are more dollar stores nationwide than drugstores.

Dollar stores have grown into a $56 billion industry, a 43 percent increase since 1998, according to the industry research firm IBISWorld and they are opening hundreds of new locations. Family Dollar plans to open as many as 500 this year. Dollar General recently announced that it would open 625 more stores this year - almost two a day - across the country, said Tawn Earnest, spokeswoman for the Tennessee-based chain. Dollar General is the largest chain nationally with more than 9,800 stores.

Something I noticed the last two times I was in Family Dollar, including today, is that the cash resgisters are immediately in front as you walk in and the last two times, the cashier behind the counter greeted me when I walked in.
