NAMM SHOW TIME!!!!!

Post by lonewolf »

Time to unveil this years new toys. After 10 years, I am hoping that Roland remembers how to build good rack mount stuff again. They never do.

Sweetwater usually does a good job covering this:

If you know of any other good coverage links, please post them!

Well, I'm glad to see that everybody around here is so interested in the latest tools of the trade! Be careful! A music thread that is actually useful could result!

(colossally big fucking sarcasm warning)

I was once again disappointed that Roland still forgets what a rack mount is.

Line 6 has a few interesting digital mixers, but they are too "pod" like for me.

Pod-like equipment is ridiculously messy and requires way too much set up time. A wall-wart completes the rig and you are ready for setup...in your living room.

The two things that interest me:

Just curious to see if it has that warm old Bassman sound from the vintage Fender Bassman.

i was reading that fender is releasing its 2012 Strat for the namm show. its different, its quilted maple with a flamed neck. ehh doesn't do it for me. and i saw a pic of a 1960 red relic strat - although in the pic i dont see much relicing and it has a matched head stock that i like. same old fender stuff i guess.

the line 6 stuff, not really up my alley. but they do have some pretty cool stuff. stuff i'd like to mess with at the store but not buy.

roland has caught my attention lately, i will definitely be reading into their new stuff.

That "warm" sound in the old rigs actually comes from small amounts of noise from the commonly available, noisy components of the day. Add to that all the warm noise picked up by antennae created by point to point wiring and you have a virtual audio heater, lol.

In general, if an amp has modern low-noise components and circuit boards with ground plane, it won't sound like the old stuff.

With Korg's new workstation out, I wonder if Yamaha or Roland will throw a new one out there. Yamaha's Motif XF series hasn't been out for too long with the flash memory, but Korg got a good jump on them.

I have been waiting 20 years for a 1 space rackmount sound module with a good playback sequencer. I am hoping they make one from the Korg for summer NAMM, but i doubt it.

I've been watching the new Fender Bassman series for quite a few months now. They also have a 300 watt version. This definitely seems to be a different flavor than the Fender/Sunn 300 watt tube head. Here's a clip of Matt Freeman checking one out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srnrAf1DtOs

The original Bassman worked better as a guitar amp, since it often didn't have enough clean headroom for the average bass player. It seems they've really switched it up with these amps.
