Another Kickass Underground Showcase!

Post by Jim Price »

I've got to take a moment to toss props out to The Underground TV, and their three-band showcase this past Tuesday night at the Crowbar in State College. Three bands with totally different sounds and approaches came, saw, and impressed with their respective sets of original music!

First, Fink's Constant from Harrisburg, doing ska and reggae rooted sounds. Tight grooves, a horn section that kicked ass, and interesting songs, a few even with political lyrics that would put a grin on Imgrimm's mug! Too bad there wasn't more crowd early to see these guys (the risk of going first sometimes), but the people who were there cheered. Hope to see this band back up this way sometime soon!

Then The Nightcrawlers, with their melting pot of sounds. Rising over early feedback problems and a drunk trying to crawl on stage, the 'Crawlers bounced between rock, blues, rockabilly, jazz and country textures and flavors, with a large contingent of fans to cheer them on. Noah Figlin's guitarwork was amazing, and Aeb Byrne's flute solos had the house going wild! The climax of their set was when The Nightcrawlers launched into their 'hit,' "African Echo," and the crowd instantly started clapping along - I can't wait to see the video footage of this on The Underground! If you haven't seen The Nightcrawlers yet, plan a roadtrip to the Phyrst in State College on any Thursday night to discover what these guys and gal are about; you'll not be disappointed!

Then Flord, closing out the night in a metal vein. A new drummer, and a bunch of new songs that totally crushed! Singer Butch Woodward is more enraged than ever; Phil Keith's guitar solos were blistering, and bassist Tom Yannitelli was a freaking wildman! The new tunes were in-your-face and bone-jarring; "Get Up" with its rowdy chorus rant, "Why You Hate Me," "Sublime," and the finisher "Outside" with its funky riff all made memorable impressions. Although the crowd thinned a bit, the hardcore metalheads stuck around and howled approval. Flord is reason number 3 (after the returns of Dragon Fire and Choking Faith already this year) why area metal is coming on strong in 2005!

Lastly, big props to Chris, Kathy, Bud and The Underground TV for staging these original showcase events. I'm hearing from more and more people who are discovering the TV show on Saturday evenings; and if you haven't yet noticed, each Underground live music event so far has seen a brisk crowd! (Even though Crowbar wasn't packed for this show, it was still a decent turnout for The Underground's first State College show.) Bands, continue to get behind this show and support it, and fans, keep supporting Underground live show events like this!

This show made trekking to State College through some wet roads and spitting snow showers worth it!

Yes, yes ,yes.....mad props to The Underground TV crew!!!!

Awesome frigin night! For a Tuesday night and all original music, the turnout was marvelous. Thanks for all who came out in support of "live original music"!

Jim, glad you could make it down from Altoona. Your support of local music is fantastic and unmatched by anyone I know. Thanks for the kind words about The NCs. Damn....wish I had seen the drunk guy. Totally missed it

Fink's Constant and Flord kicked arse and it was nice to meet some of the band members from both bands. I think there will be a show swap going on with Fink's and The NCs.

Can't wait to see the shows on The Underground. The TV Crew did a hell of a job and deserve the support of all us musicians and fans.

A special thanks to the NC fans - you all are the best fans a band could ever hope for - much love :D

Peace out!

~Steve

Thanks for the very very kind words Jim.

We had a great time at crowbar and can't wait to do another one. Thanks to Chuck for being cool with us and Matt for mixing me some bad ass sound to work with.

I personally want to thank all the bands that played this show, as I am right now sitting and sifting through shot after shot of amazing video! It was great meeting everyone, I wish I would have had more time to sit & hang out and I hope everyone had a great time.

Everyone was excellent Tuesday and we hope to work with everyone again in the future. If you missed any of these bands perform make sure to check www.theundergroundtv.com and find out when any of these great bands are playing in your area. It'll be WELL forth the trip or cover to see any of these bands play. (keep it original!)

And I thought I had pulled all forms of communication before I locked that door!!!
Again just to echo what everyone else has said, the bands Tuesday night were absolutely incredible - and the fans definitely appreciated their efforts. The performances made our jobs easier, everything made for great video - it also made the job harder - had to REALLY work to keep focus on the task at hand and not get carried away with just enjoying the music! LOL The entire night was great fun and again we want to thank everyone for making our first foray into State College such a great success!
Also the good news for our viewers, is since Chris was on lock down all day in the edit bay, you'll get ALL Kathy for this weeks episode LOL. If you didn't make it out for Tuesdays show, tune in Saturday at 6 on FOX 8 to see what you missed!

I caught the show before I left last night and I must say it was an awesome one indeed. All three bands kicked ass. To be honest, I've been less than impressed with a lot of the stuff I've been seeing on the show (though I've seen some awesome stuff too), but the bands on last night brought a smile to my face. I can't wait for the individual episodes.

If you didn't make it to the Crowbar show and want to know what you missed.............................................................................

This week's show highlights State College natives The Nightcrawlers.

An eclectic mix of styles & genres creating a unique blend of folk and blues with a 70's vibe thrown in for good measure.

Don't miss this weeks episode!!!!! Definitely a band worth checking out live.
