Excessive Equipment

Post by kayla »

I was wondering around the strat-talk forums and came across a thread and this guy had literally 24 strat's. i dont get it. why the hell do you need that many guitars? lol

anyone here have an over abundance of gear?

i personally have 5 guitars. one acoustic (my first guitar). one partscaster (all the parts were given to me), a roadworn (also a gift), my jaguar and my main strat. and i'd like to get rid of one or two, but the sentimental value is there.

and amp wise. i have two, one for gigs and one small practice amp.

i am guilty of having way to many pedals. and i only use one. if that.

thoughts?

- kayla.

because they can.

Some people collect cars, some people have too many animals. Having a lot of guitars doesn't seem any weirder than anything else.

They guy with 24 strats is probably a collector.

Living room collectors are pretty common, especially with Paul Reed Smith guitars. Go to www.birdsandmoons.com

PRS makes all kinds of limited run "collectibles". A 1990s Dragon can go for $20,000 and up!

Here is a 2011 "Private Stock" model that recently sold for $10,500:

Lots of musicians suffer from G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) :D .

In my younger days when I had more money to spend on gear, I bought basses, guitars, violins, P.A. gear, lights, amps, etc. but never had dozens of guitars like that guy. Most of the things I bought I used but I have a couple guitars that are new. I have sold many things over the years but still have too much stuff that I don't use. If anybody is having a case of G.A.S. and is looking for some gear, I will be happy to get rid of some stuff. :)

I have five main players, which does seem a bit excessive to me at times. Kenny generally brings 4 or 5 guitars per gig, but we often play in 6 different tunings throughout the night, and you can't just a take Floyd-equipped guitar in 440 and retune it for Drop A. I do have an array of different amps and cabinets; however, they do serve a functional purpose over than just having a room full of gear. Based upon the factors of a gig - such as whether or not full FOH support is provided and the size of the room - I can mix and match...and hopefully save my back a little in the process. :?

I read somewhere that a guitarist's wife asked him "How many more guitars are you going to buy??" He said the answer will always be "just one more".
Pour me another one, cause I'll never find the silver lining in this cloud.

He should go on the show hoarders and we can take all his junk and throw it in a dumpster.

Part of my GAS problem is that I can now afford those guitars that I could only dream of years ago. Never thought I would have the collection I do today & hopefully it's not done growing yet! Plus this seems to be a slightly better financial investment than a crack habit.

Wife and I have our own version of "don't ask, don't tell."

She doesn't ask how much I spend a year on sound equipment, and I don't tell her. Helps keep things peaceful.
