I think this was the 1st Grammys since about 1995 that I didn't get disgusted and turn off.
I was glad to see all that you mentioned and even Led Zep got a lifetime achievement award. Sure, I don't like U2 much, but I'd pick them over the likes of Eminem, et. al. It was especially good to see that Ray Charles got one on his last work.
The biggest thing that I noticed is the wonderful lack of rap/hiphop and the re-emergence of strong R&B. I think the pendulum has finally swung the other way and hopefully this will signal the demise of the faux-musicians with turntables and rhyming thesauruses that have plagued us for so long.

...Oh, the freedom of the day that yielded to no rule or time...
I had an oppportunity to watch some of the pre-awards shows, and I saw Kathy Griffin on the E! network have the audacity to literally blow off John Paul Jones of Led Zep. She asked him ridiculous questions about rolling blunts with Snoop and also had him in retarded conversation along with the Blind Boys of Alabama.....she should really learn to recognize a legend and pay him the respect that he deserves.....
All in all, I thought it was a great awards show for once.....I actually enjoyed the group version of "Across the Universe", although it was weird to have all of these politically active artists singing, then have the illustrious Scott Weiland of Velvet Revolver/STP being part. I understand he kind of had to be there since VR was doing the backing music, and I like Weiland, but it seemed a little odd......
Kudos to VR for their award, and I would have liked to have seen a performance by them, but I was impressed by some of the performances, namely, Melissa Etheridge and Joss Stone commemorating Janis Joplin, and also the Kanye West performance was entertaining....good show for once...maybe a shift is coming where talent means something again...get away from the shit that has been infiltrating the airwaves and music channels for the last several years...talented artists are bankable artists, and I think that the industry realizes this more and more each year

CYPHIN
I must say that I have never been a huge Greenday fan but I have heard their new album and I have to say It is far better then any other Greenday album out there. Sounds alot more creative.
Jason/CYPHIN

I've always been a fan of Green Day's early "in your face" stuff, but thought that they lost their edge and direction after they hit it with a slow tune. I actually like the hit single too, so the CD's going on my "to buy" list. I'll download a couple samples first though. Any title suggestions for "American Idiot" singles to download?
I listened to on a lot of punk/new wave stuff in the eighties, from The Clash to DEVO; and U2 was a fav back then. I still have "Boy" and "War" on vinyl, and back then every startup band was playing "I Will Follow" off of "Boy". It was so simple and popular. Back then and even up into the '90s they also were very anticommercial, and shunned media exposure and the Grammys. Didn't even show up when they were nominated for "Album of the Year" one year. But they've been at it a long time, and I've tried to see them positively in their new light, but that is hard to do. I really haven't liked anything that they've done since "The Joshua Tree".
I got to see them live from the press box at 3-Rivers, (thanks to my ol' pal Craig), but the "Zoo TV" shit just wasn't for me. Maybe that was the point where they decided to go commercial... and in a BIG way.

... and then the wheel fell off.
Brian Wilson wins over Neil Peart for a song about f^king cows?!

I coudn't agree more with DMFJ about Brian Wilson...
Rod Stewart won his Grammy because he went and cried to the committee about never having won in his 40 year career. He's been doing nothing but sh*tty Motown covers since 1985 anyway.
As for U2...all I can say (for me) is that Boy, October, War...the rest can go in the sh*tpile. I hated The Joshua Tree. But, I'm just one person.
Ron, the Green Day album is amazing. The whole thing is a full-on concept album, and is definitely worth the scratch to pick it up if you are at all a fan. One of the tracks is 9 freaking minutes! Whoda thunk that from a punk-pop band? Best album of theirs since Dookie. Highly recommended.

HATE
I HATE the grammys !!! Huge popularity contest that's it, oh yeah and occasionally they give an award to someone who deserves it as a token so as not to look TOO Bias !! crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap .... You get the point..
I'm glad I didn't have to fight in a war, I'm glad I didn't get killed or kill somebody, I hope my kids enjoy the same lack of manhood
I have always been a big fan of Green Day, I don't care what anyone says. I have a pretty wide spectrum of music, and Green Day just happens to be in there.
Ron, the American Idiot album is fantastic. You won't be dissapointed with that purchase.
Anyway, back to the cows...I don't care if he is doinking them or what, the fact of the matter is that Neil was robbed and no one is going to change my mind about it.

I've heard alot of their tracks over the years, not my thing. I'm not much of a fan of punk to begin with and what I do like is stuff like older Misfits. But these days, I'm not into anything new that's come out of punk. Just my opinion.

Yep, that's about it. I never put much creedence into those award shows. It's just the music industry kissing its own ass. The performances are always top notch, though.Imgrimm01 wrote:I HATE the grammys !!! "He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.
Most of the Grammy awards go to people who really don't deserve them because the voters don't have a clue.
However, I agree that this year's show was probably the best overall. 90% performances and 10% awards. I noticed that all of the performers had to play live (NO LIPSYNCHING). The only debacle was the Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony piece. Even the songs and performers I don't like at least came out and did their thing. I am not a fan of Alicia Keyes but she gave a great performance with an orchestra. Here is a young performer who can sing, play, and write all very well. This proves that there is actually some talent out there and not just the no musical ability rap nonsense that is always rammed at us.
Kudos to the producers of the show.
