Vox Amps

Post by kayla »

I'm lookin into gettin a smaller watt tube amp for recording/practice.

the Vox Modern Classic has caught my eye. has anyone used it?

and what are your opinions on vox amps? if you aren't familiar with Vox what would you suggest for a small wattage tube amp for recording?

thanks!

typically, they have (this is hard to describe) more emphasis in the upper midrange, giving them an almost Brian May (Queen) tone, but without the extreme saturation that he uses. I call it a "boilerplate" tone.

Depends on the style of music you play......

But I like a
Fender blues Jr
I've use these without and pedals. I have also use a low gain over drive (like a mad professor honey bee) and also a BYOC shredder, and a fuzz pedal when I played Jesus Christ Superstar.

You can do some simple mods to this amp and at low volumes it has similar clean tone to a twin.

Best size/weight price value out there imo.

I like them. I have six including a 68 Super Beatle. Although I have a nice tube AC15, I use the cheap AD15 modeling amp most of the time even for some gigs. I set it up to switch between the Vox AC30 and Fender twin models.

I haven't seen tha model that you discribed but I'd imagine it won't let you down.

I know a couple of years ago they brought a modern Vox AC50 with 2 switchable channels, one a vintage AC50 and the other a Marshall Plexi and theat thing screamed!

Just looked it up. You must be talking about the Vox "Night Train" series. These don't look like traditional Vox amps. The 1st one out was 15 watts. Had good reviews and didn't cost too much money. Now they they have a 50 watt one with 2 channels and the 1st Vox tube amp I ever knew of that is class A/B like a Fender or a Marshall and I'd imagine cost some bucks. Traditional Vox tube amps are "Class A". One channel is "Vox like chime" and the other" High Gain". Both have EL84 tube in the power section.

The good sag and saturation is from the POWER tubes pushing, not the preamp tubes, that's why it's important that they are one channel so you can just turn it up till it sounds good.

I have that Vox amp with an 8 inch speaker. it sounds nice, but make sure you play one before you buy it. British amps sound WAY different than American amps. Look into tweed Champs (Class A) and see what you think about them too.

how about a rigged 2 watt made from a old tube reel recorder.. it saturates real nice at very low volume with just the original 4 inch speaker?

Kayla, Check this one out at Guitars N Stuff. If you don't have a cabinet, unplug the speaker on your Fender amp and use it as a cab. I think it's worth a try, anyway.

The most famous vox amps are known for EL84s power tubes. The sounds these tubes produce are amazing in my opinion. Every EL84 amp I've played has been pretty much incredible. They are low wattage tubes, but they pack a punch. The best part about them is that it's easy to get power tube distortion (power tubes are the bigger tubes that most commonly come in duets or quads) out of them as opposed to preamp tube distortion that you get first out of most higher-powered amps (with el34s, 6l6s, etc.). Power tube distortion is where it's at in my opinion, and these amps make it easy.

I'll sell you my mint Koch StudioTone 1-12 combo for $800. 20W of thee greasiest smokinest EL84 tone you'll find. Aside from the ability to outclean a pre-CBS blackface, outcrunch a Marshall and outgain a Mesa, its got neat studio features to boot.
