A swamp-blues song called "Leaving Mississippi." I started it a couple years ago, and lost the original lyric somewhere, so I wrote some new ones. It's about a guy who shot someone who was trying to steal his car, and now he has to go on the run. I wrote it in Open D on dobro, but play it in Open G with the band, so the vocal is far more challenging... it's harder to play up there, too, as Open G sounds more country than blues, but the band plays it easier up there, so that's the key.
The Mommies debuted another of my songs, " 'Nother Couple Days," last weekend at a day-fest near the PA Grand Canyon... it's a Texas-swing/blues hybrid, and the crowd was very nice to us for playing it.
You blues-pickers, I'm seeing a definite rise in the popularity of blues-based material, especially outside the bar scene. Somebody needs to form an acoustic blues combo, and play Piedmont, Delta, and such. Your market would be restaurants, arts & community festivals, college-town bars & coffeehouses, and the like. A 3-or-4 piece could stay pretty busy, I think.

Sing, Sing, Sing used to be featured in a Chips-a-hoy commercial back in the 90s.Hawk wrote:Sorry, I don't get it. Wow, I guess that's good marketing, since I remembered that.

And how is that calf muscle healing up? That has got to be extremely painful, man! I imagine the recording date is going to be postponed. Would not be good to come in without being sure you're at 100%!ToonaRockGuy wrote:Working on walking with a torn calf muscle and also being tired of the damn rain.

Working on? Hmmmmm....
I was actually fortunate enough to "work" with some great players this weekend, if they frequent ROCKPAGE they know who they are. Anyway, all the different songs we were playing really made me want to start working on lot of things that I know I personally can do so much better on. Also, it made me want to stay away from the "filler" shit we all have played in our past. I really want to collaborate with other people to create something because I never really did it before. Don't get me wrong, I've jammed with dude's that could write songs from licks to lyrics in 5 minutes and sound awesome...but that was them. I want to put what I feel down with some sense of accomplishment and have the people that work with me to feel the same. I know it's easier said than done but hey, what the fuck.
So I'll conclude with this, I'm working on being the best that I can and hoping and wanting to play with people who can set aside the FACT that "Skeezerboy" is !00% ASSHOLE, but Steve is a guy who wants to create some good fuckin' music with some good fuckin' people....what are you fuckers doin?

It's definitely hurtin'. The band is taking a "wait and see" stance for the moment, we want to see how it is in a couple of weeks before we postpone anything. I'm trying to have sticks in my hands as much as possible, but I'm afraid the double bass chops are going away and I am gonna have to really work to get them back. We'll see what happens. Thanks for asking!

Matthew Freeman is a great bass player! I have a feeling this one will take a good bit of work.
