HOMEGROWN ROCKER 8/21/11 (AREA AMERICANA SPECIAL)

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the August 21 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com).

This week, we explored the wide range of roots-based performers on the local and regional music scene on our first-ever “Area Americana Special.” We heard music from area bands and performers who incorporate elements of country, folk, bluegrass, honky-tonk, blues, rockabilly and other American roots music into their style and sound. Along the way, we debuted new songs from the Southside Strays, Dick and the Deer Gutters and Whiskey River Panhandlers. We also updated “Local Music News,” went “Across State Lines” to check out a song by Morgantown, West Virginia high-energy bluegrassers the Hillbilly Gypsies, and remembered the late Roy Hanna, Jr. (who passed away August 6 at age 60) with a 2002 song by Bill & Roy for this week’s “Local Music Flashback.”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

THE BADLEES – “Star to Fall”
THE RUSTLANDERS – “Blind Faith”
RUSTY GUN REVIVAL – “Smoke”
MAMA CORN – “Goin’ Up the Mountain”
THE SOUTHSIDE STRAYS – “Georgianna”
MYSTERYTRAIN – “As the Day Slips Between” (performed live 11/23/10 at The Saint, Asbury Park, NJ)
HOTWING JONES – “What the Hell”
THE WHEELS – “Blow”
THE NIGHTCRAWLERS – “Lover’s Test”

HOUR TWO:

THE CLARKS – “True Believer”
EAST COAST TURNAROUND – “Love, Life & Murder”
DICK AND THE DEER GUTTERS – “Country Roads”
THE GOOD SEEDS – “Cancer”
THE WHISKEY RIVER PANHANDLERS – “Tupelo’s Burning”
BILL & ROY – “Old K-4” (2002, Local Music Flashback)
THE HILLBILLY GYPSIES – “Mercy” (Across State Lines)
MYCENEA WORLEY – “100 Days”
MICHAEL REICH – “Live for Today”
THE UPDOWNS – “Dehydrated Hangover Blues”
JOHN CHARNEY – “Ode to Krystle”
THE BUSTED DRUNKS – “Old No. 7”

On our next show, our guests will be Johnstown indie rockers Higher Fives! We’ll meet the band members and learn their story, hear songs from their new recording Cystems, and hear from other bands and artists from the Johnstown-based “My Idea Of Fun” music collective, of which Higher Fives are a member. We’ll also update “Local Music News,” dig into the archive for another “Local Music Flashback,” and review Rigel’s Xenophobia CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!” Higher Fives visit the “Homegrown Rocker,” next Sunday night!

In Local Music News…

In a surprise development, State College Americana performers The Rustlanders have decided to step away from stages for the time being. In a message on the group’s Facebook website, The Rustlanders cited circumstances beyond their control involving their label/management that have prevented them from issuing their new album. The group plans to take some time off before writing and recording a new album in the future. The group played their final show before the break on Saturday night at the Elk Creek Café in Millheim.

Huntingdon County rockers Sound Of Silence will return to stage action next month after more than a year away. The group will introduce a new bass player, Tommy Lynch. Sound Of Silence will make their return on September 24 at the Hillside Tavern in Fannettsburg.

A benefit is being organized for next weekend to help out a young area assault victim. Pellegrine's will host the "Have A Heart Benefit" next Sunday, August 28, to raise money for the family of a young Tyrone girl who was recently the victim of an assault. The bands and performers confirmed to perform so far include Felix and the Hurricanes, Hot Damn, Rapid Fire, Slacker Theory, The Hawks, Johnny Danger, Ambush, Triple Threat, G211, The House Band, Hard Drive, Camino Sky, Rich Dasch & Harmonica Dave, Mindspine and Rain Must Fall. The start time is tentatively set at 2 PM. More details including donation and other aspects of the benefit will be announced shortly.
