Jani Lane of Warrant R.I.P.

Post by Jim Price »

Jani Lane, lead singer of Warrant for many years, was found dead in Los Angeles on Thursday. The story:

Jani and Warrant once played in Altoona at New Sebastiano's in the late 1990s.

Of course, Warrant's legacy will always be their big pop hit "Cherry Pie," and other radio songs like "Down Boys," the ballad "Heaven" and "Uncle Tom's Cabin." I actually was a fan of their 1992 Dog Eat Dog album, which showed a more aggressive and less pop-geared direction.

Another '80s era icon gone...R.I.P.

I saw him on an interview here about a year ago and he was saying that he hated most of the music he was playing. From his words: "They were not songs that I wanted to do, and the music industry forced them on me". He also looked kinda depressed.

Yeah, I know that Jani wasn't into a lot of the poppy stuff that made Warrant big. The irony is that I always thought they were the best songwriters out of that genre of music. Yeah, Heaven was schlocky, but stuff like Thin Disguise and Big Talk was really well written. They also wrote some really awesome stuff like Angry Young Man when they were trying to do the more edgy thing in the early 90s.
"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.

I was at the New Sab's Warrant show and they were great. Like Jim, I was a big fan of the Dog Eat Dog record, and it was a shame it didn' t do well. RIP.

TMZ is reporting that they found half a bottle of vodka and prescription pills by his bed.
