Playin for Chairs

Post by kayla »

I had my first experience sunday night playin for chairs. it kinda sucked cause no one was there, but it was kinda fun just bein able to mess around and have no pressure.

anyone else notice a decline in people going to see live music?

another thing i noticed, some people will be there but have no interest in the music. i could be doin a one handed cartwheel while playin my guitar with flames shooting out of it and not get a glance ... i think thats more annoying than playin for chairs.

thoughts?

Welcome to the Ethan Allen Tour (playing to the furniture).

Yes, it seems less and less people are going out to hear live bands and that is sad. Most bands have gigs like that even if they have been around for awhile. It comes with being a musician.

Just remember to play the same show with the same passion and intensity for 2 people as you would for 2,000 people. Some of the few who are there will appreciate being entertained even if others don't really pay much attention.

Keep rocking!

Like Moxham said, Kayla, Ethan Allan tour. It happens, especially with a new band. Don't get discouraged at all, it's just part of the game. Every band I've been in has had those nights, and you just have to soldier on.

I've always played live with one mantra: If there is one person, one single, solitary person sitting in that room who has worked hard all week, paid their hard-earned money to come in and have a beverage and listen to the band, I'm going all-out 100% for that person to give them the best show I possibly can. Because it makes it all worth it when that cat comes up after the show or in between a set and says something nice about the band or your playing. That's the payoff. I used to do this for the money. Now I do it because I love to play with the guys I share the stage with, and I love to make music. Money is secondary.
Dood...

Kayla, never let that get you down. Everyone experiences that at some point. Don't forget, the economy sucks and people are afraid to spend, it's summer, and in addition a newly established band. Just keep hammering it out and honing the skills. If you build it, they will come. Good Luck. B

it didnt discourage me, i love to play. we've had a good crowd there before, so i guess it was just a slow night.

everything is real new to me as far as gigging. its definitely a roller coaster ride. and i'm loving every minute of it.

i hope i die with my strat in my hands.

I always look at them as a no-pressure gig, which can be fun. You just play for you, and have a good time. We used to goof off more, and people, the few that were there, seemed to dig it.

We play the same show no matter what and many times the owners, managers, and patrons have told us we played like the place was packed and they appreciated that.

+1

Club owners and waitstaff (who often have pull with the club owner) often remember if you snubbed a small audience by underperforming. Going all out rockstar can be pretentious with a small crowd, but totally ignoring the audience and treating it as a "paid practice" is not good either.

Use that show to play for you. Play what you want, and how you want, you don't have to please anyone if no one is there.

Its called summer. people would rather be outside, people are on vacation, etc. I don't understand why bars even try and attempt to have shows this time of year...
The script was written, and the villian was cast. The provocation needed, they will provide. They did it before, they'll do it again.

pat you're gay....we had a great turnout for our show and it was the hottest day of the year i think

no really he's right...summer isn't always the best time to expect good crowds. people are on vacation, having get togethers at home...any number of cool things to do outside.

i wouldn't get discouraged at all. as everyone stated....it happens. it will happen again. just keep having fun.

Sex appeal counts for something. That and the free blow jobs to men you were giving outside.
