A Day for Kids

Post by The_Underground »

Hey everyone
We're doing a free kids day Saturday Aug 27th downtown at Heritage plaza. We have an office right across the street and we've talked to the city about doing an event. They are blocking off some of the streets and letting us set up pretty much anywhere downtown. We have a few food vendors coming in like candy apples, cotton candy, wings & fries, etc. We want to make something fun for kids to do before summer ends.

We'll be having kids karaoke, magic shows, an Elvis impersonator, the fire department is bringing fire trucks, humane society is bringing animals, Mcintyre's candies is doing a tour to show how they make candy, sheer power is doing face painting, habitat for humanity is coming in to do crafts, Aaron’s is bringing a big TV & XBOX to play, and we're working on more.

It will be from 11am to 11pm

We would like to run a movie after it gets dark. We have a projector, now we’re working on a screen.

All the day cares in town are sending flyers home for their kids parents.

We would like to run some bands beside the old Viponds building on the stage for the day but we are short staffed. If some of the rockpage community wants to get together and do a free live outdoor thing downtown, we already have the day rented. It has to be family friendly so nothing heavy or swearing.

If you would like to volunteer or have something you would like to do for kids, please pm us. We’re putting our print work together now.

If any business or individual wants to sponsor pm us as well.

So far Sheetz, Sheer Power, The Press Box, Mcintyre’s Candies are sponsors.

Thanks!

If it wasn't so taxing financially to do this (my assumption, maybe I'm wrong?), it would be AWESOME to do something like this monthly! I've gotta hand it to you guys, you do all kinds of awesome stuff!

Yeah, insurance that’s the killer. Trash removal, flyers, etc. We’re hoping that this one goes well enough that next year we will do one June, July Aug. That was our plan this year but it took longer than we anticipated for the city to get us our permits and we had unexpected family stuff come up. With it being so late in summer we decided to still do the Aug to give kids something to do before school starts.

We're still adding stuff to this one so if you have any ideas, send us a msg.

I looked around. Too short notice for anyone to donate or to get a sponsor to rent it. Great idea though!

Does anyone have a big screen to show a movie on? We have a projector and wanted to show a movie at the end of the night (pirates or something) but we can't find a screen big enough.

Any leads?

Chris, I used to be a projectionist so I know a thing or two about running movies. I highly doubt you'll be able to find a real screen so here's a few suggestions:

Any white cloth with a fairly tight weave can be used for a screen. If you've got a big white bed sheet at home, that's perfect. Or head out to Joanne's Fabrics and buy enough for however big you need it to be. White curtain blackout cloth would be a good choice. You may have to sew or staple two lengths of cloth together, but if it's fairly large no one will notice. Just to be safe it's probably a good idea to turn the projector on wherever it's going to positioned and see how big a picture it creates so you know how big the screen needs to be and to make sure the projector can get a decent focus at that distance.

Then you need a way to secure it so it's flat. Easiest way is to nail four lengths of wood together into a rectangle and stretch the cloth over it. If that's not workable, you can use cord to hang it with. Loop the top and bottom of the cloth so as to make a hole along its length like a normal curtain would have and just thread the cord through it and hang it up. If you were inside I'd say just nail it to something and let it hang, but outside it'll flutter every time the wind blows and that'll get annoying.

Alternatively, if you can acquire flat pieces of plywood that are big enough, just paint them with a few coats of bright white and you're good to go.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice. I was actually going to buy one from ebay but had no budget to work with this year. Hopefully this Sat goes well enough to do more next year.
