Altoona vs. Pittsburgh

Post by Don Hughes »

I don't know if this is entirely true, but from my observations, I prefer the scene in Altoona/Central PA over the Pittsburgh scene. The musicians here are willing to be in multiple bands, and with Rockpage, there is a general "musician family."

In Pittsburgh, I've talked to tons of musicians, but not too many of them actually follow through on starting things up. In Central PA, there are some incredible things going on with the Crazy Fest, End Of Summer Jam, etc.

Anyone agree or disagree?

I always hear from out-of-area observers that we seem to have a tighter-knit scene here in central PA, and that people and musicians are more willing to chip in, work together and help one another out. I especially hear that regarding the amount of benefit shows that happen around here, and how all the bands and fans come out and show support.

Jim, I agree. I've been here for over three years, and I hardly ever see promotion for benefit shows. The tight knit community is also right on the money.

I had a friend who was originally from Southside, guitar player by the name of Mark Davis. He played in bands there, places like Nicks Fat City and played here and yes he found the scene very different here. He said it was much more competitive there and it took him awhile to be comfortable jamming with other bands and stuff here. He said there, bands had to have their own dressing rooms and had tantrums and shit. BTW, anyone know him or hear from him...it appears he dropped off the face of the earth?
