Wing Off's are back!
Wing Off's are back!
Any of you guys playing in their lineup?
If I'm reading correctly on Lakemont Park's website, they're listing a $5 admission to the park, which includes rides, waterpark and the WingOff. Tussey Mountain started charging admission to their Wing Challenge a few years ago, so this is not really surprising. If they are charging admission to the WingOff, I'll be curious to see how many people still attend, especially on nights when there is other stuff going on, like the downtown Hollidaysburg concerts, etc.
Here's the link to Lakemont Park's web page regarding the WingOff schedule and band listing:

Jim,
I hope that's not true about the cover just to attend the wing off. Hell with rides and waterpark..i want wings, suds & tunes!!
Nice line up of bands too..i WAS expecting to attend every thurs but $5 bucks is too steep just to walk on for the privilege of spending even more $.
Anyone else know anything about this?

At least all the bands are local this year. Not to mention, 5 of the six acts to choose from perform original music in their sets. That definitely adds value to the admission price in my book.
The Wing Off's are being organized by a different person than previous years. I also would have liked to have seen them remain free.
We're dropping our new CD, Tupelo Tree at the last Wing Off on August 25. See you then, JP!

I suppose that I am just completely disgusted with the local booking practices and the sheer number of years a band has to be around before the typical "citizen" will risk losing $3 on you. The only way around it is to engage in the typical cronyism that we all know and love--if you happen to have cronies in all the right places.
The sad part is that quality doesn't have anything to do with it.
Its pathetic.
Does anybody have any suggestions on a good place to move to that doesn't have 6 months of January?

...Oh, the freedom of the day that yielded to no rule or time...
man, I hear you! Why do we live here? What's keeping us here? Sheetz on every corner? Is that why we don't leave??lonewolf wrote:I suppose that I am just completely disgusted with the local booking practices and the sheer number of years a band has to be around before the typical "citizen" will risk losing $3 on you. they should play for free...good exposure & PR would pay for itself many times over

I doubt ANY of the bands are doing it for free.faster pussycat wrote: how much are the bands making off this gig? does anyone know this? maybe they charge too much and that's why the $5 cover![]()

BUT...Its only a $5 cover, people. Your cigs cost more than that and they kill you.

The cover charge isnt what gets me at all. What confuses the hell outta me is the condoning of "hey, bring your kids to the park and drink and drive home! yay! wings, beer and bands!"
Drinking and driving is bad enough, but having it at an event that welcomes children is horrible. Who else do you think they are targeting with the rides and waterpark??

It really chaps your ass, huh?KeithReynolds wrote: The cover charge isnt what gets me at all. What confuses the hell outta me is the condoning of "hey, bring your kids to the park and drink and drive home! yay! wings, beer and bands!"
So you assume that the kids are being driven home by drunken drivers?
Don't you think it should be the parents to parent their children as opposed to the organizers of these events? You don't have to take your kids.
My family has a fantastic time at wing offs and I enjoy myself some suds while I'm at it. Kids have a blast and sober wife to get us home safely. I realize not everyone is responsible, but fuck man, do you really want more rules?

Im not sure that "chaps my ass" is the right way to say it, haha.
I get what youre saying dude, and no, "more rules" arent ever good...but when it concerns safety of many people, I think rules are a good thing. Especially in a world with all the pointless rules we have.
Its not just the safety of the people there, it also concerns the safety of everyone else on the road that had nothing to do with the event.
I was just saying that to me, this stuff is a much more valid concern than a $5 cover.
$3,000?? HA! damn. Im gonna hold my comments back on that one.
That was a year the event was free right?? whoa!

Lakemont Park is charging the admission price NOT the bands or the organizers, the bands DO NOT get paid anywhere NEAR what has been mentioned in this thread, a few of the Wing Off's this year will be benefiting charities such as the Steve Cosco Ride, and Operation: Christmas Child. They are also having Cock Fights...

The story about the WingOffs' new admission charge is in Tuesday's Altoona Mirror and on the website: http://www.altoonamirror.com/page/conte ... ml?nav=742
