Bands that suck live.

Post by f.sciarrillo »

What bands do you think suck live?

For me it would be Poison and Aerosmith.

I never seen them in person but I did see them on tv performing live a couple of times, and they were terrible. I'm not sure if it could have been the sound man or station. But then the bands before them sounded decent, so it is possible that they really are lousy in person. lol

Back to bands that suck!
The worst band I ever saw live was probably Bloodrock, in the early 70's. They had that song "DOA", and refused to play it because they were into all of this peace and love stuff! Give me a break! That's the only song that ever made them any money! Everyone was yelling for the opening band to come back on stage and they weren't even known for anything they'd done!

Alabama sucked, too when I saw them. But to cut them a break, they had JUST started out and were in the very beginnning stages of their fame.

When I saw Led Zep, Plant's voice was shot, and he was not hitting all those high notes. It just was not right. I guess that could be true for any band if the singer's voice is shot.

I saw Blind Melon open for the Stones and that was wrong in a number of ways.

They weren't (ever) ready to play that size venue and were terribly mismatched for the crowd. Not to mention a lousy band to begin with.

Saw Soundgarden in the 90's with VoiVod and Faith no More.Chris Cornell was so ANNOYING, trying to hit notes that just weren't there. And Kim Thail sucked.Fucking awful band live at the time......although i was there only to see the mighty VoiVod and to catch Jim Martin before he took the best part of FNM away.

That makes me think of how a band sounds great on cd, but sucks live. And Sound Garden were great.

I'm going to have to say the worst I have ever seen live would be between Breaking Benjamin, Puddle of Mudd, Bret Michaels Solo Band, Shinedown, or Chris Daughtry.

There are way more bands that suck live compared to bands that are good live. Thats what my ears and eyes have told me. Just about every record made since the mid to late 90's has been digitally edited to hell and is loaded with auto-tune.
What you hear on the albums are barely the band. Everyone wants so much editing done and everything to sound way better than it actually is.
So when they play live, you get the real sound and ability of the band. Which most of the time is a huge let down. Studio magic is just as bad as it is good for bands.

Shit, even my fave band had a 50/50 shot of sounding good live whenever I saw them.

Also, one thing to consider is the amount that some bands play. The laid back bands dont have it nearly as bad as the bands with more energy. I guess dudes get tired after a while and that may also be a reason that live shows can be a letdown.

This is just how I see it, im not saying any of it is law. :D

I've never seen either of the bands live you mentioned. However, I've seen a lot of bands live, and I've also seen those same bands on TV. By and large it is the case with most rock bands that they will suck on TV. Unless of course they just use there CD track or some recording to do a lip sync performance.

The reason? Well, it's really damn difficult to make a good TV mix for a rock band on the fly. That's my opinion.

I also think that when you are not actually at a live event, it's easy to sit back and be an armchair critic. You don't experience the "feel" of the sound or "excitement" of the crowd. Being there in the moment can actually distract your senses from a crappy performance. Not to say it's impossible to sense that, nor is impossible to give a great live performance. I just think sitting at home watching a TV is no way to judge a live band, from a sound mix perspective and an "in the moment" perspective.

Soundgarden:
Chris Cornell
Ben Sheperd
Matt Cameron
Kim Thayil

One of these things is not like other...Thayil. The others could play great. Thayil is HORRIBLE! His only excuse could be barring broken arms...is being right handed, playing left for the first time. Must've been a heck of a nice guy for them to keep him around. I figured they'd let people think he was avant garde...but he wasn't. He wasn't.

Yeah, I could never get into anything Thayil played when it came to leads. He did some interesting textural stuff with his rythmn playing, but when I think of great guitarists from the 90s, he isn't even close to being on my radar. I don't like to trash players, but I could just never get into him.
