Rogue lead guitar..
Rogue lead guitar..
Let's say your lead guitar suddenly goes "rogue" ..in the middle of a tune. does a jimi hendrix on you.
Much of Hendrix's playing was so impromptu (live, on stage)..how does the bass and drums keep pace to make it all work out?!
When he goes rogue on you how do you keep up?

A good soloist is still following the basic chord structure of the song. The rest of the band is still playing those chords and making the changes according to the pattern of that song. Mostly for blues and a lot of rock, that is the classic I, IV, V change patter, usually over 12 bars. There are many variations on this pattern.
So those soloists who seem to be way out there, still know where the song is by hearing the chords and changes.
Listen to Eric Dolphy, who "gets out there" maybe more than anyone. He makes his way back just about every time.

(when listening to Dolphy, I try to imagine some guitarist trying to play those solos, would love to hear that)

Sorry, every time I see this thread, i imagine that i'm playing a solo and all of the sudden the truss rod goes crazy and the guitar lights on fire while i'm playing it. Keep forgetting that my position is the antagonist, lol
