Is Blair County "Musical Groundhog Day"?????
I have come to the conclusion that Blair County is the site for the musical equivalent of the movie "Groundhog Day." The same few bands all the time, everywhere.
This is really good for a few, really bad for most and really, really, really bad for the "local music scene".
Discuss.

preach the truth! this area seems content with the same bands playing the same songs, and there are very limited musical styles being performed. the lack of creativity is sad and boring... Blair County needs to start revering the Muses, and they will pour down the grace and inspiration of the Divine Spirit. the only thing that gets better the more you hear it is the Infinite Holy Name. HARIBOL!

Jeff, I'm surprised to see this coming from you,, it comes off as immature, and very crybaby... Last I saw, you have a sucessful band, and seem to play often enough.lonewolf wrote:I have come to the conclusion that Blair County is the site for the musical equivalent of the movie "Groundhog Day." But I have to ask... What have you done for the local music scene, other than complain about it??
I have never seen your band involved in a local benefit show. Alot of these "groundhog day" bands have donated their time & energy to help others in need,,and at the same time, they are promoting themselves & building goodwill with the bar owners; the same ones that book the bands.
Oh well, at least this is a music related thread, and I don't see Hawk & UCJoe bitching about politics.......
Hey Guido! It's all so clear to me now.......
Spoken like someone who doesn't support the "scene" he is complaining about.....Jasaoke wrote:I suspect they play rather similar setlists, as well. I'm also certain that this is why attendance is low.
The "groundhog day" bands you are referring to seem to have no problems filling venues.

Immature? Crybaby? I think not. If it was a corporation, it would be more like whistleblower. This thread isn't about me or my band or any other band for that matter--its about the establishment. Funny, I didn't mention any bands...how could you possibly know whom I was talking about?tom wrote:Jeff, I'm surprised to see this coming from you,, it comes off as immature, and very crybaby... Thank you so much for making my point crystal clear.
You come off as just a little too anxious to defend the status quo...perhaps my statement hit a little too close to the mark? This thread isn't about the bands and for the most part its not about the bar owners. The best examples I can give illustrate my point are that 1) Hollidaysburg has most of the same bands that they had last year for the uptown concerts and 2)the WingOffs booked two bands twice when there are probably 100 bands to choose from for those last two slots.
You also proceed from a false assumption: I am not concerned that my band didn't get those slots...my concerns are based on observations of an entrenched establishment that seems to reject anybody who is not on their approved list. Nod, nod, wink, wink. You see, I love competition, but I absolutely abhor cronyism.
I didn't even contact the WingOffs because I was told by what I thought was a reliable source here on Rockpage that they weren't hiring local bands. In the future, I will be sure to ignore such advice.
While its completely irrelevant to the subject, just because you haven't seen us at Aldo's or 30 Something for benefits doesn't mean we don't do benefits. During the past year, personnel shuffling and a member's side project have made scheduling gigs of any kind a problem. Unlike many other bands, I don't like to book gigs without knowing who the band members will be and what kind of product I can deliver.

Ya know Bill, I can even remember one benefit where we were turned down because of this very topic.Hawk wrote:I've seen lonewolf around supporting local jam sessions and I know for a fact that he has offered his band's services for benefits.

You aren't the only person that I communicated with on that topic Bobby. I'd rather not name any names because it really isn't anyone else's business.Hurricane wrote:I hope your not referring to me on this, i just looked in my pm's and found one of you asking me for a number and a name.lonewolf wrote: I didn't even contact the WingOffs because I was told by what I thought was a reliable source here on Rockpage that they weren't hiring local bands. Maybe the same bands are booked all the time because they have proved themselves to be reliable and have a certain following that will frequent the bars or wherever the bands they "know" are playing. I see a lot of posts looking for bands to help out with charity events and small multiple band concerts and venues. Maybe these would be good opportunities to introduce your band to people who may not be familiar with them.

That goes without saying. That is just the nature of the business and my band has done all that. I don't have any problem with that and I sure don't have any problems with any of the bands. I am talking more about flagrant cronyism and nepotism...whether its intentional, subliminal or not.autumnsky wrote:Maybe the same bands are booked all the time because they have proved themselves to be reliable and have a certain following that will frequent the bars or wherever the bands they "know" are playing. Its not just limited to the music business.
For instance, try getting a job at Penn State Lite (Altoona Campus) or other local institutions. It seems like cronyism and nepotism run rampant around here.

Not really. They represent varied genres for the most part. Once again, I'd like to impress that this thread is not about the bands. I don't even consider many of them as competition since they are not our genre.Jasaoke wrote:I suspect they play rather similar setlists, as well. I'm also certain that this is why attendance is low.
The only thing that is common amongst most of them is that they've been around for 20 years or so.
I suppose that when it comes to bands, it takes that long to drill 8 letters and 2 words into the typical Blair Countian's brain.
Sorry. Barring injury or illness, I don't know if I even have 14 more years. I will therefore be turning over tables in the temple, disrupting borough councils and otherwise raising hell whether any of you like it or not.
