Does anybody who visits Rockpage listen to or play music? It seems like the only thing that people come here for is to whine about politics and watch 80s videos on YouTube.
I was looking through some of the older posts and it seems like back in the day (early Rockpage) people came here and talked about playing music and the local music scene. There were actual conversations and exchanges of ideas. People talked about their bands, they were not afraid to mention their band names in their posts, they aired their business and their concerns and seemed generally interested in Central Pennsylvania music.
I wasn't a member then, maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.
People lament the decline of the local scene but, you know what? It's OUR fault. There seems to be no effort to improve it. Nobody seems to give a crap about making their show better. It's easy to see why people stopped coming out to hear music.

I am one of the most frequent political posters on RP. I have also started many musical threads that went nowhere. I just started a thread about a very cool song and band I found out about, The Stone Foxes.

I love their take on this classic blues song. Great guitar tone.
Well, the thread just was ignored. Zero replies.
I would love to see a local band cover this song with this version. Could the K Band do this?

I guess I've gone and shot my mouth off again. (there's a hair trigger on this thing). The fact is, I've been having a frustrating couple of months.
I apologize for the off-handedness of my original post.
Joe, thank you for your efforts. I think you have responded on most of the threads I've started and I know you are a local music booster.
To answer your question, we certainly could do "King Bee". We're currently in a glut of new material (nearly 600 songs published with another 100 ready to go). I think our version would probably land somewhere between Stone Foxes' version and Voodoo Child, but blues isn't one of those things we orchestrate or arrange; we just let it happen. If we added it, would that get you on stage?

Just maybe the mic might find its way in my shaking, sweaty hand. lolJasaoke wrote:I guess I've gone and shot my mouth off again. (there's a hair trigger on this thing). The fact is, I've been having a frustrating couple of months.

I really have a bad singing voice. My minds knows where the notes should be, the voice does not ever get there. In Catholic grade school, were we all had to be in chorus, the nuns would put me way in back and say that I did not have to sing so loudly. LOL
Yeah, music threads have a way of devolving into Metallica suck/Metallica rules. People are confrontational, especially online.
I live for the technical threads, the "how-do-you-do-this" stuff, because I've learned most of what I need to know "the hard way," and am eager to not let others make those mistakes. I also didn't have any benefactors, (my dad loaned me a dollar for my first guitar at a yard sale), so I've had to make do with whatever gear I could muster.
As much as I hate to admit it, Joe has excellent musical taste, and if he says you should listen to something, you should listen to it. Politically...

I don't bother much with Rockpage like I used to. I usually still check it about once a day, but I usually don't feel compelled to post.* Most working musicians I know don't bother with it much anymore, either. I hate to be the "back in the good ol' days" type of guy, but I definitely preferred the earlier culture of Rockpage when it first went to the forum format. We had a good heaping of fans and hobbyists, but we also had A LOT of working musicians, as well as engineers, promoters, club owners, ect. I have nothing against the fans or the hobbyists being on RP, since those people help the world go 'round too; however, I do wish there were a lot more working musicians still on Rockpage.
*It's ironic that this is a thread I felt compelled to post on.

"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.
I basically retired based partially on health reasons, but even more so, because the local scene has become increasingly difficult to enjoy. I play loudly....always have....always will. The PLCB keeps handing out noise-ordinance fines, which has the bar owners on edge....and understandably so. But if I have to tippy-tap through every song, and still repeatedly get told I need to tone it down, my interest in the local scene came to a screeching hault. So I said the hell with it then I'm done. If I can't enjoy what I'm doing why do it anymore?faster pussycat wrote:I think the "local music scene" is not what it used to be. Thank God for Aldos! or i'd never leave the house
man, I hear that. Do you play Guitar by any chance? Metal? What covers do (did) you play?sstuckey wrote:I basically retired based partially on health reasons, but even more so, because the local scene has become increasingly difficult to enjoy. No, I was the drummer for Dragon Fire. Once we disbanded however I got with Jeff Renner and Matt burns and played the usual bar-band cover tunes. Stuff I really didn't enjoy playing but was doing it for the money (i know....I know....I already heard it!!) lolfaster pussycat wrote:man, I hear that. Do you play Guitar by any chance? Metal? Love M.E.T.A.L. but Hey, love classic too.

Well, what do we do? I refuse to believe that things are the way they are and nothing can change. People still want to be entertained. People still enjoy music. People still want to be around other people.
I think, (and it's just my own opinion, I know) that there has actually been a market saturation. Too many bands were around so they started competing with each other. I think that low-rate (i.e. Lousy) bands started taking up slots and stage time. This led to venue owners expecting to pay very little for their entertainment. What they got were lousy bands, so patronage dropped dramatically, so they can't afford better bands. (yeah, a lot of this whole rant comes from a lack-of-booking frustration, but still...)
I want to be part of something that is fun & profitable & musical.
(I'm probably asking too much for central Pa.)
