I found this out recently. The Temptations originally recorded Smiling Faces Sometimes and did a long album track. "Smiling Faces Sometimes" was planned as the third single from Sky's the Limit, but when Eddie Kendricks, the song's lead singer, quit the group in late winter of 1971, Whitfield had to shift plans. "Smiling Faces" was given to The Undisputed Truth, whose recording of the song became a Top 5 pop hit.

Speaking of Jo Jo Gunne. Jay Ferguson, who was in that band as well as Spirit also had a few solo hits in the 70s including these two - Thunder Island and Shakedown Cruise. He also has done many movie and TV themes and soundtracks over the years.
