Actually, Frank, I'd argue that with ya. I do love AIC, and think that they were far and away the best of the "big 4" that came out of Seattle in the 90's, but the argument of best of the grunge Seattle bands would need to be seriously made for Mother Love Bone. The "Apple" album is an absolutely stunning sonic experience, and had it not been for the death of Andy Wood, there would have been no Pearl Jam and no Soundgarden.
If you've never heard it, do yourself a favor and buy it. It is one of the most lush, full, absolutely heart-rendingly beautiful records I've ever heard.

That is a very valid point, Kevin. I forgot about Mother Love Bone. I have "Apple" and agree that it is a great cd.ToonaRockGuy wrote:Actually, Frank, I'd argue that with ya. [edit] let me rephrase that; I have "Star Dog Champion" which is also Apple. Or wasn't it during the making of Apple when Andrew Wood Died? I forget now. [/edit]

Music Rocks!
I was once a Grateful Dead-basher, myself. I still can't sit and listen to an entire album, BUT... playing their stuff is different. It's not that they used outlandish chords or difficult passages, their music is generally 4 chord, but it's how the chords are arranged that makes it interesting. You jam along, and you think you're going to the IV-chord, but you go to some left-field chord for two beats, then back to the I, then the II, then the I, then the IV, where you originally thought you were going. It's not the notes, it's the order they're in.
My picks for over-rated:
The Doors
Led Zep
Nirvana
Oasis
Dave Matthews Band
Madonna
Springsteen (who I think is respectable, but not godlike)
The Cure, and all 80's English crybabies.
Guns N Roses (Appetite was genius, everything else was well-bad)
In bluegrass, Rhonda Vincent & The Rage. They used to be among the top pickers in the biz, but Rhonda's a diva-type, and chased all the good musicians away. We opened them twice, and I was really let down both times. Mama Corn actually got more applause on both occasions. A real shame, they used to be the best.

Frank, Andy Wood died on March 19, 1990, 2 days before "Apple" was to initially be released. The label ended up releasing the record in July of '90.f.sciarrillo wrote: That is a very valid point, Kevin. I forgot about Mother Love Bone. I have "Apple" and agree that it is a great cd.

Gotta partially agree. I don't necessarily think everything they did post AFD was bad per say, but it definitely didn't live up to their debut. Some bands can pull off the epic, pseudo-progressive rock thing very well. The Use Your Illusion double release was just overbloated and pretentious. There are some good songs between the two releases, but they really could have cut out all of the filler tracks (did we really need two tracks of Don't Cry with two sets of lyrics?) and released one tight, extended play album. Don't get me started on The Spaghetti Incident? I think you need to at least be eligible for a Greatest Hits or Best Of... album before you are artistically eligible to release a covers album.songsmith wrote:Guns N Roses (Appetite was genius, everything else was well-bad)
From Welcome to the Jungle to Rocket Queen, AFD was kick ass the whole way through. It's a shame that a band with so much potential burned out so quickly. Ironically, Slash, Duff, and Matt have been able to remain relevant while Chinese Democracy was finally released to the thundering sound of crickets.
"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.

I'm glad your expertise could clear that up, however, AIC bores the hell out of me, major snoozefest. I can't say the same for nirvana. My opinion is better than yours.ToonaRockGuy wrote:Alice In Chains was a trillion times the band Nirvana ever thought about being. And Cobain was nothing compared to Layne Staley.

Van Halen - Here is my reasoning...Great musicans...Great frontmen (Dave and Sammy) I just don't believe that Eddie could play a heart felt solo if his life depended on it. Every solo sounds like an extension of the last one. JMO
Pink Floyd - Again great musicans...Gilmore can do with one note than most guitarist can with an entire fretboard...again...one song/solo sounds like an extension of the last.
I know that is their "style" but come on man ....what else ya got!!

....fuck that Stinkin' fuckin' hippie shit....This is mean but to bad the druggie fuckers all didn't O.D. ....30 years ago. The hippie sheep make me sick to this day. Hate "em....Smoke a turd in hell Jerry Garcia, you fat fuck...autumnsky wrote:The Grateful Dead!!! BOOOOORRRRRINNG!!! Maybe ya just have to be a stoner to really appreciate them!!!

Wow, have some anger problems? He was a musician who practiced his art all his adult life. He allowed (encouraged) fans to record his music without any profit to him. He toured as much as any musician ever, and charged reasonable prices for his concerts. What did he personally do to you?SkeezerBoy wrote:....fuck that Stinkin' fuckin' hippie shit....This is mean but to bad the druggie fuckers all didn't O.D. ....30 years ago. Yeah...that was a little hateful. I'm just a hippie hater. As far as what he did to me personally.... Garcia himself, nothing. But he inspires so many stinkin' hippies it makes me sick. I never really had a problem with the whole "Dead" movement until I was helping someone out (who was "on the road" touring w/ the Dead) and I came home and was robbed blind by the fuckin' so called peace lovin' hippie cocksuckers. So, I just hate them, that band, and pretty much anything that they ever did. I don't care about their fan's or if they get free music...I'd give the shit away too...garbage is free.
Yeah, no shit. Like other kinds of music are immune to drugs and their influence. The following people also took drugs:
Hendrix, Kobain, Joplin, Layne Staley, Bon Scott, Brad Nowell from Sublime, Jay Bennett from Wilco, John Bonham, Keith Moon, John Entwistle, Steve Clark from Df Leppard, Tommy Dorsey, Kevin Dubrow, Howie Epstein from Tom Petty & Heartbreakers, Judy Garland, Lowwell George from Little Feat, James Honeyman-Scott and Pete Farndon from Pretenders, Shannon Hoon from Blind melon, Brian Jones of The Stones, Michael Jackson, ODB, Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy, Jim Morrison, Gram Parsons, Elvis, Sid Vicious, Bobby Sheehan from Blues Traveler, The Rev from Avenged Sevenfold, Gidget Gein from Marilyn Manson, Ike Turner, Andrew Wood, Tommy Bolin from T. Rex, Dwayne Goettel from Skinny Puppy, Kristen Pfaff from Hole, Hillel Slovak from RHCP, Johnny Thunders from The NY Dolls, and the list is far larger. Those were people who actually DIED from drug abuse/overdose. Can you say none of them contributed anything to music?
Drugs and music are irreversibly intertwined. Not only do musicians have access to pretty much anything they want, from fans and hangers-on, but they often have endless hours of travel time, down-time, and the idea that they are bullet-proof, as evidenced by how awesome people think they are.
If you don't like the Dead for their music, I can't fault you for that, but if you only like straight-edgers, your fave list will be limited to The Wiggles, and some gospel groups. And you gotta wonder why those Wiggles... wiggle.
