O.k, here is one: In Boz Scaggs's early years he had a super group backing him up. Can you name the super group? Hint, this group went on to be one of the greatest in music history.

Yes, they are super group and one of the greatest bands in music history. Look at the resume of each performer and you will see that they played on hundreds of songs from the 70's and 80's.ZappasXWife wrote:Toto is a super group and the greatest band in music history? Really?

Sorry, ZX, I have to agree with the others. Toto, at least in their early years, was a musician's band, all top-shelf session players who coincidentally mostly knew one another in high school, which was informed by rock, R&B, Funk, and fusion. From Wikipedia:
"Lukather achieved notability in the 1970s and 1980s as one of the most sought-after session guitarists in Los Angeles, playing with a wide range of artists from Aretha Franklin to Warren Zevon.[16] He performed the guitar solo for Olivia Newton-John's popular 1981 single "Physical", which was Billboard's #1 single of the 1980s. He has performed on over 1,000 records spanning 36 years.[12] He largely credits fellow Toto members David Paich and Jeff Porcaro for getting him exposure in the industry.

Listen to anything from the first 4 albums, after which the whole situation got too corporate for my tastes, but they still had the occasional hit. The third album, Turn Back, is probably my all-time favorite rock album... it's masterful songcraft played by a profoundly talented band with a killer vocalist, and strikes me as close to the perfect pop-rock album as anyone's ever gotten. I still listen to it in full every 6 months or so, and I'm not one to do that much.

Well I guess because I'm not a musician and sort of really critical about what music I like, but....they are a real snooze to me. Yes I knew all about their role in music history and Jeff Porcaro and all that. And wasn't he the one that died spraying his lawn with pesticides? Crazy....
I just never cared for their music at all. Rosanna, Africa? Naseating. Thats just me...I'm sure they are very nice people, lol.

Toto has released a total of 17 albums, and have sold over 35 million albums to date. The group was honored with several Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame in 2009.
David Hungate, the original Toto bassist on the first four albums as well as the Boz Scaggs stuff and many other hits is a terrific bass player. After he left Toto, Mike Porcaro, brother of Jeff & Steve, replaced him and he is really good as well.

Toto may not appeal to everyone, but they were fantastic musicians and deserve any credit due to them. Also, another little piece of trivia on Boz Skaggs is that a little known gentleman (from our area) I grew up with and used to jam with in high school (Everett) by the name of Tim Calhoun toured with Boz as his guitar player in recent years. Tim freakin' smokes and studied (Jazz) at University of Miami (Fla.).

Yes but even before that he was part of the Steve Miller Band.... and don't forget....Dickie Betts used to do his old lady when Boz was on the road... hence one of the great Allman Bros songs, In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed... heh heh... Duane spilled the beans on that one to Rolling Stone mag...
