HOMEGROWN ROCKER 5/8/11 (CHRIS VIPOND)

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the May 8 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com).

Thanks to our guests this week, Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band, for an interesting and enlightening show! The group updated life since the addition of drummer Randy Servello, and shared a new song from their forthcoming sophomore CD, Tupelo Tree, expected out later this summer. Along the way, we debuted a new song from Nick Miller, updated “Local Music News,” dug out a 1998 song by Misconceived for this week’s “Local Music Flashback,” and reviewed Midnight Shift’s Rhythm Rockin’ Boogie CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.”

Here is this week's playlist:

DAVE DISTEFANO – “Get Your Back Off Against the Wall”
EAST COAST TURNAROUND – “Where’s My Sunshine”
CHRIS VIPOND & THE STANLEY STREET BAND – “Be”
NICK MILLER – “Smoke and Mirrors”

On our next program, we welcome the newly-crowned winners of City Hotel’s second annual “Battle of the Acoustics” competition, Northern Cambria-based acoustic duo 2nd Street! We’ll meet brothers Jared and Jesse Carnevali and learn their story, plus the pair will perform several songs live for us! We’ll also update “Local Music News,” raid the local music archive for another “Local Music Flashback,” and review another local CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.” Acoustic duo 2nd Street visits the “Homegrown Rocker,” next Sunday night!

In Local Music News…

Gregg Allman will headline the 3rd annual AmeriServ Flood City Music Festival in Johnstown later this summer. The Johnstown Area Heritage Association made that announcement this past week as they unveiled their performers for the Festival, which happens August 5-7 at downtown Johnstown’s Festival Park. Allman will perform on Saturday night, August 6. Other performers announced for this year’s Festival include Tab Benoit, J.J. Grey & Mofro, soul singer Bettye LaVette, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, Project/Object with Ike Willis, Bill Kirchen & the Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods, Brothers Past and numerous others. Area names participating in this year’s Festival include the Southside Strays, Jeff Perigo & Friends and Black Coffee. For more information on all the performers and tickets, visit the Johnstown Area Heritage Association’s website, www.jaha.org.

A date has been announced for the annual Steve McCulley Memorial Show. This year’s show will happen on Friday night, July 29, at Aldo’s in Altoona. Bands performing at the show will be announced soon. Steve was a popular area drummer who performed for such bands as Half Tempted and Korruption; he passed away unexpectedly on May 20 of last year.

And what bassist Scott Bush first reported on the “Homegrown Rocker” last week is now confirmed…NailDriver has expanded into a five-piece band with the addition of Todd Dale on rhythm guitar. Todd made his official debut with NailDriver during Saturday’s “Day Of Rock” Easter Seals benefit in Hollidaysburg.
