Cymbal cutting/lathing?

Post by Craven Sound »

I got an old Zildjian 18'' Dark Crash for next to nothing because it has a chunk out of it, as well as a small crack leading from it. It looks 14'' or so of good cymbal left and I'd hate to trash it. Anyone ever had a cymbal turned down locally? If so, where? Thanks.

Craven.

I don't know if anyone locally is in the business of cutting cymbals, so to speak. You should be able to get it done at a metal shop or speed shop. The problem is to effectively stop the damage, you have to get the crack at the very beginning of it, which may actually be invisible to the naked eye. You need to get a really bright light and examine the cymbal by placing the light underneath the crack and seeing where the cymbal actually blocks the light.

You could try Dodson's Speed Shop on Beale Avenue in Altoona (right across from my house).

If you'd like, I can also contact the cymbal company that I have an endorsement through. They can cut cymbals down and do light repair work, I'd just need to see if they will do it for a non-Saluda cymbal, and if so, how much they would charge. Let me know if you want me to check in with Jamie and find out.
