Atlanta Rhythm Section was a great band (they are still together with a few original members) of very seasoned musicians. The Atlanta Rhythm Section members originally came together as the house band at Studio One Recording Studio in Doraville, GA. Buddy Buie, and songwriter/guitarist J. R. Cobb recruited three musicians they had worked with previously in the Candymen (a group that had backed Roy Orbison), singer Rodney Justo, keyboardist Dean Daughtry and drummer Robert Nix. Buie, Cobb, Nix and Daughtry had been part of the group the Classics IV - remembered for such hits as "Spooky", "Stormy" and "Traces". Two talented local session players also joined in - guitarist Barry Bailey and bassist Paul Goddard. These musicians played on a number of other artists' records and the decision was made to make an album of their own in 1971.

Listen to the guitar solos on their version of Spooky... tasty as heck.

I saw them open for BOC and Uriah Heep at the Philly Spectrum in 1973. Their bassist, Paul Goddard was one of the best bass players I had ever seen.

This morning was the first time I heard it, on wowy 97, and it stuck with me. It is a good song.

I've heard spooky before, I never they did it a cover of it.

The interesting thig is that Robert Nix. Buie, Cobb, Nix and Daughtry had been part of the group The Classics IV and recorded the original version of Spooky and then put a little different ARS twist on it for their version.

Some sad news I just found out today.
Former ARS lead singer Ronnie Hammond dies from heart attack last week.

Here are a few other great ARS tunes.

I can remember seeing these guys at the Jaffa Mosque with Grinder Switch in the late 70's. Always liked their sound, Hammonds vocals fit in perfectly. I still have a couple of their albums somewhere in my collection. R.I.P. Ronnie
