He's depressing enough as it is. I'd hate to hear a country song from him.

Gee, I thought that Aaron Lewis song sounded familiar. Not much different than this one.

I does sound familiar.

Edited because I meant to say "Does", not "Doesn't".

I dig the song, though I do find some of the lyrics and Toby Keithesque patriotism kind of contrived. I don't know if I'd call it pure country, though. It reminds me more of the country-flavored tunes that rock bands occasionally do (e.g., Wanted Dead or Alive, Alcohaulin' Ass, Rockstar). It could even pass for a Days of the New tune.
"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.

I find it to be a cop off of felon country. The lyrics to me are more of a Jamie Johnson type lyric than his own, and Jamie Johnson does it better.

Jamie Johnson has as good a chance of resurrecting actual country as anyone in the last 5 years or so... let see what he does. I can remember when they were saying Leann Rimes was going to bring back traditional country, and she went pop immediately.
I think the outlaw/alternative/Americana scene is the Next Big Thing. Their scene is really entrenched, they've been at it for years, all they need is a mega-hit to get people's attention. It's a wide-open genre, Outlaw Country on XM plays everything from Waylon to Sonic Youth to Drive-By Truckers to AC-DC. There's a flexibility there, an openness that invites good musicians to come in and get comfy, and lots of young people are alienated by the corporate nature of music, so they latch onto it. Austin TX is where it's at!
On my end of things, the folk/acoustic/bluegrass, Asheville NC is Music City. It used to be the Colorado scene (Yonder Mountain String Band, ect.), but that's died down somewhat. Local boy Sav Sankaran plays upright bass for the Dixie Beeliners, an Asheville-based band that tours extensively worldwide. Jam-band is mixing in, too, thanks to festivals that add acoustic jam-bands to their lineups, like Delfest.
While I do see a slight flattening in the bluegrass market, it's still as viable a live draw as any genre, but the outlaw country thing is poised to really take off, I think.

Yes. Dig the Outlaw Country station, especially Mojo Nixon's show.

There are some new guys who are bringing back the original squeak and squeal:

Wayne "The Train" Hancock is my favorite.

Hank III is pretty good, but not the songwriter his dad and grandpap were. (This song is actually a cover)

I love felon country, the originals were who got me listening to country music. It is just Jamie Johnson has that voice and sound that the other had. Arron Lewis does not. I think a lot of it is also looking at the music he used to play. If he came out as a outlaw country singer, I would probably be thinking different.

Hank III is pretty good, Rick. I like Hank Jr. and Sr. as well. That is the first time I heard Wayne Hancock.

It' s like any genre of music. Once it is mainstream, it's watered down and commercial.

I'd say I'm not a big fan of this. The genre isn't my home by any means, and even though he CAN sing, Aaron Lewis just doesn't seem to have the swing and sway of a country boy. It's rather ironic that he's got this whole "Been everywhere, and now I have to do that" thing. Yes, it can be a good thing to get your feelings out in a different way, but it just seems a little overdone at this point. All in all, it's a decent song, and I can say that he's got a fair voice (if only mostly lower key), but he's no country superstar. But, I'll give kudos for the shot. I just hope this isn't too big of a trend. I grew tired of Staind past their first major album. Of course this is more tolerable than when they went pop anyway
