A few months ago, as you might recall, we were discussing the future of all ages shows in Altoona, after an unfortunate incident resulted in the Becky Sheetz Building no longer permitting all ages concerts to happen there.
I'd like to publicly recognize and praise a venue that has stepped up and given area young people a place to see live bands: The Lion's Den in Juniata.
I have seen two shows there since Christmas; Sound Driven during the Christmas season, and part of the five-band show this past Saturday night, featuring the Pipebombs, Inside Fifty, Hungry Saturn and more. Both of these shows had respectable attendance (I understand this past Friday's show with Punchline, Dropout High and several other bands drew over 330 young music fans - very cool!). The kids were well-behaved at both shows, and the folks who run the venue keep an eye on things to make sure no problems develop. They also serve food and refreshments, plus have pool and games for kids to partake in during the show. From speaking to the folks who run The Lion's Den, they are supportive of giving kids a place to see music and enjoy a drug- and alcohol-free good time. Based on what I witnessed both nights, this is a cool place for young fans to catch shows. Here's hoping The Lion's Den can keep it going, and continue to provide a place for these shows to happen.
