Suggestions on an acoustic

Post by Banned »

I have a really nice Schecter Diamond Series acoustic-electric, that I love very much, and for a little while now I've wanted an inexpensive regular old acoustic, for taking camping, to the beach and on trips and such. Something between 100 and 200 dollars, that I really wouldn't have to worry about too much. I'm not very experienced with acoustics, but I have seen some nice Epiphones and even some Yamahas I liked. But I wanted to get the opinions of people who really know what they're talking about. What does everyone think/recommend/suggest?

Thanks
Evan

Well, for $100-200 if it stays in tune then I'd say go for it! :D

This has a solid top which is nice for a $200 instrument. Epiphone's usually come set up fairly nice. This would be my pick for an inexpensive player

go cheap. for camping and beach trips (rain, salt, campfires) anything that you don't mind throwing in the back of a pickup truck or leaving in a tent for a week.

I had a Yamaha F-310 dragged it from here to the deserts of Utah, up and down the Rockies and back to ole Altoona sold it to my best friend for ten bucks. That guitar still rocks. I think he still has the same set of strings on it. Great git-fiddle, that was over ten years ago, but I'd say check em out.

Might not have been the exact model but close enough, very nice...

Good luck and have fun searching dude!

Cool, thanks for the advice guys. I have until May to decide (I'm probably gonna get one with my birthday money) so I'll keep thinking on it. If I find one I'll definately put it on here and see what everyone thinks.

Tornandfrayed- I thought about a Yamaha because of playing that one Stevie has. I always thought that was a really nice guitar that played well. Do you know what model that is?

I bought one of those Luna travel guitars in at Music Emporium... I like it! Solid top, seems pretty tough, too. Would I play shows with it? Probably not, it sounds dry and tight due to the low volume of the body, like an old blues guitar, and the tuners are dicey for live work... that said, the short scale is fun because you can bend the hell out of the strings (short scale = less string tension). I think it was roughly $125 with a gig-bag, strap and pitchpipe.
There are actually quite a few choices, I think. Your average El Cheapo acoustic is generally more playable now than they were 20 years ago, thanks to CNC machine cranking out picture-perfect parts and cheap offshore labor.
I really dig the Epiphones, too. I played nearly every acoustic guitar at Guitar Center in Ft Myers FL last spring... my top 3: Martin HD-28 ($3500), Taylor 810 ($2300), and an Epiphone EJ-200 ($400). The Epi isn't solid-top, I don't think, but sounded big and bassy with a crisp high-end, and that's all I ask.

It is a nice little acoustic / electric, but... If I was gonna get one... I would look for a full body. Just cuz the sound is a little fuller. Matter of opinion I guess. See ya bud!

Oh yeah, that's nice, but I didn't know it was acoustic-electric. I'm probably gonna go with just a regular acoustic. I might go into Music Emporium sometime and check out their acoustic selection.

my very first acoustic was one of those jam packs. I got an ibanez black spanish acoustic dreadnaught and a gig bag, and strings, a strap, and everything on musiciansfriend for like 100 bucks, and other than the fact that my bed fell on it :( its a beautiful guitar and it plays really nice i think. I'd look into it and you get a free set of strings too :)

Buy a used guitar...why buy a new one just to jam around a campfire? You'll get a better quality used guitar for the same price lesser quality new guitar..imo
