Need some info on Burgi's Roundhouse

Post by Brian of the Clan Plush »

We're scheduled to play Burgi's next weekend (1/15) and I wanted to hear from others who have played there. Whats the PA/sound tech like? How't the stage? what kind of crowd (built-in or bring-your-own), etc. Any info would be appreciated. I haven't seen the place since it was still under construction, but have heard good things. If you have opinions you'd rather not poste, feel free to shoot me an email or PM.

ps....don't forget to get involved with www.projectlifeboat.com

We (Shift) have played there several times. The sound system is pretty nice, but a little weird in how it is setup. The system consists of a 24 Channel mackie board, amps and speakers. The system is basically stacks & racks plus a board.

The guys that installed the system are top notch sound guys and they did a beautiful install job. Very clean.

There is NO monitor setup at all. They do not provide mics, mic stands, etc. There are NO effects.

They do not have a stage or drum riser.

Acoustically the room is a little tough. It is almost like playing in a gym. VERY reverberant.

We always have a great time when we play there. Just make sure to bring everything.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Dave.

Thanks Dave. Holy crap I'm glad I asked! I thought they had a full system and in-house sound guy. Sounds like we should just bring everything except speakers and just run our own sound (which we often do anyway....so no worries). What kind of crowd do they get on saturdays? Is it "built-in" or does each band have to generate there own crowd? What about lights?

As for lights, I think there are 4 or 8 PAR's up in the ceiling. They are 38's or 56's. They have basic controller for them. We use our own lights and just turn those house lights on for some front lighting.

FYI:

When we got there last night we found that they now have a drum riser. It is kind of spongy, but it works.

I'm not sure if it is a permanent fixture, but it might be there when you play.

Again, the absolute quietest stage volume possible will help tremendusly... the room was designed for the big-screen, not live music, even though bands were part of the plan from the get-go. It's primarily a restaurant, but the owner is a fan of, and wants to support live music, which is good.--->JMS

Amen to that Songsmith! I am very lucky that the guys are VERY good about that. Our bassist (Joe) doesn't use a bass amp on stage, our guitarists are very good about stage volume and the whole band uses In Ear Monitors. Stage volume is NOT a problem for me at all.

I would like to take a moment to thank the band for making my job easier!

Oh crap....I am so fuqt!

My guitar player's need for volume is only tangentially eclipsed by my bass player's deafness. Woe is me!

Oops, sorry man, I really was wondering how Lost Ledny made out... I'm betting stage volume was an issue with them. I mean, I'm sure they went over well, there were a lot of cars in the lot when I came by, I was just wondering sound-wise.
SideStep played Johnstown Brewery on Sat. , and keeping the stage volume down really made us a hit with management... they liked being able to talk. Thanks to Duaine from Conniptions for the hint. Kinda the same situation as Burgi's. What a cool place to play!---->JMS

This is matt from Lost Ledny. We had a great show at Burgi's. For our first show at that establishment we pulled about 150 people at the top of the night. We did have a slight problem with stage volume. At one time it seemed to loud and when we cut our stage volume down it wasn't enough to hear ourselves on stage but we found a fine line to make everything work. We showed up for the 9:30 show at about 5:30 to allow us time to become familiar with the system and the room. I found out real quick that there is no compression or eq. We brought our own rack of preamps and hooked them into the board and everything went fine. We had a great night and in my opinion Burgi's is a great place to play. Also, the sound system is hooked up very professionally. NICE WORK

The hard rock cafe in pittsburgh has a similar style of hookup but with more speakers spread throughout the entire building.

Thanks for all the info on Burgi's. I'm sure it will help my pre-gig mindset alot knowing that we have to keep the volume down right from the get-go, rather than having to deal with it on the fly and getting all pissy (I'm a singer....we get pissy....thats our thing, yanno?....its part of the union rules I think  )

They have EAW tops and subs. They are all hung from the ceiling. They are powered by QSC amps. There are actually 4 sets of speakers. Two hung above the 'stage' and two other hung at the opposite end of the dance floor pointed back. We only run the set above the stage.

Maybe this is too late but we played there last night. In the 6 foot tall rack has a 8 channel Mackie mixer. There are only 4 available inputs because 4 were being used for something else. They did have a 16 channel snake on the floor but only 4 channels went into the mixer. They also had a cover over the EQ section so we couldn't use it. We used our own mixer and just plugged it into channel one, turned all the power amps on and used our own monitor.

They have a 24 channel mixer on a rolling cart. You have to ask for it.
Also, along the wall back by the pool tables, there is a access door with a connection for a short "jumper" snake to hook up the board......
They used to have one of the guys who installed the system show up and explain things, but now there is an instruction sheet.
They don't have an in house expert who knows how the system runs, so it does help to talk to bands who have played there
It IS a fun place though

We played at Burgi's Roundhouse recently.

You would think if you build a brand new place with the intention of having music, it would be acoustically good. It is like playing in a gymnasium. It even has a metal ceiling. The acoustics are very bad.

No cooperation from the staff. Nobody to tell you anything about the in house PA and lights. No monitors. We asked twice to have the lights turned on and nobody would do it. We decided to just set up our PA and lights and not have any hassles since we know what our gear will do.

The customers and waitresses were nice to us but words of advice about the management. Be very careful dealing with them.
