Teena Marie R.I.P.

Post by Jim Price »

Pop/R&B singer Teena Marie passed away at age 54. The story:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/Music/1 ... tml?hpt=T1

In my early radio days at WFBG-AM, I had a female listener "stalker" who used to call the request line and play Teena Marie's "Lovergirl" through the phone to me. This chick was scary, so I declined her offer. When I spurned her advances, she called my boss and tried to get me fired. True story.

You could have remade the Clint Eastwood movie and called it "Play Teena for Me". Maybe she looked like Donna Mills.....

Bryan Lee had a track called "Tina Marie" that was on Kenny Wayne's "10 Days Out (Blues From the Backroads)" album. Would that be about her?
Laugh if you want to, really is kinda funny, 'cause the world is a car and you're the crash test dummy.

Teena Marie was a whole package performer and musician in that she sang, played guitar, keyboards, and percussion, as well as being a songwriter, producer, and arranger. R.I.P. Teena.

I knew a chick who was a fanatic for Teena... Jim, if your stalker was her, you should have taken her up on it. She was hot! Sure, she was crazy, but way hot. I'm just sayin'. --->JMS

Trust me, John, this one wasn't hot, just a whack-job. She served the purpose of teaching me about the dangers of stalkers at an early age. It could have turned into that Clint Eastwood movie!

That's a great story, Jim. I bet you have many more. Maybe you should publish them...

Any old timers probably remember when Johnny Porazzo played the Sheraton back in the 80s when his band included Reggie Boyd and his wife Arlena. They ripped on Lovergirl! Reggie was a monster guitarist and Arlena sang great and was very easy on the eyes! Good Times

Oh man, Lovergirl has an awesome Rick James-ish groove! I bet it's a kick to play. I always wanted to try You Dropped A Bomb On Me (Gap Band?), Word Up (Cameo), and Back In Love Again (Sanford Townshend?). Those songs have grooves that just sound fun to play.--->JMS

I used to play Word Up by Cameo back in the late 80s and early 90s with the band Axis and it always packed the dancefloor. It was completely different than anything else the band did since we were a rock cover band but it worked out great every gig. Being a bass player, it was the only song I got to play funky slap and pop bass lines.
