Death Metal on Discovery Channel
Flipping through the TV today, saw a program on Discovery Channel about Death Metal. (This program, "Death Metal Music", will be on at various times and days through December 4 on Discovery Channel, Atlantic Broadband Channel 59.) Thought it might be interesting and watched it...
Boy, was that one sided.
It basically is an entire program attempting to link Death Metal with Satanism, violence, and murder. There's no "pro-music" views at all, save a couple very short video bits from Glenn Benton (Deicide).
People just don't get that music is music, and as musicians, we're not responsible for paying attention to your kids. That's a parenting problem, not a me problem. This has been going on since Robert Johnson "sold his soul" at the Crossroads, through Elvis and his swiveling hips in the 50's, those long-haired renegades known as the Beatles in the 60's, through Zep and Sabbath in the 70's, and on and on through Metallica and Slayer really launching metal into the stratosphere in the 80's and 90's.
Why can't parents just understand that they need to PAY ATTENTION to their kids and what they are doing? If you don't want your kids to listen to Death Metal, DON'T ENABLE THEM TO. If you don't want your kid playing Grand Theft Auto on XBox, don't fucking buy it for them. Talk to your kids. Listen to what your kids are saying. Listen to what they are listening to. Play what they are playing. But fucking PAY ATTENTION. It's not rocket science, for crying out loud. Christ.
Sorry, just felt the need to rant. Fuck Discovery Channel, and long live METAL.

There's a documentary floating around called "Metal: a Headbanger's Journey" that is actually on our side. It's pretty interesting and it addresses the Satanism thing. The guy that did it (Dunn was his last name i think?) made the argument that the church burnings and shit like that are very much a cultural thing, and very likely would have still happened even if the Death Metal scene didn't catch on over there.
Definitely a great thing to watch. VH1 Classic airs it sometimes

My mom did everything in her power to keep Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, and the like out of her house but I wouldn't mark my cassettes (age showing). I'd use code or abbreviations. Ex: M-RTL was Metallica: Ride The Lightning. And I scribbled it as small as I could. Sometimes I couldn't tell myself and had to listen to them. For some reason, she never bothered them or asked about them. But bring one in the house that actually had it written on it, and I'd watch it get tossed into the coal stove.
And for the movies she didn't want me seeing...well, I had friends whose parents let them watch them.
When I was out on my own, I let my freedom show by buying the shirts and other stuff I always wanted that was band related. It shocked her at first...said she couldn't believe I listened to that. But to make the point, I asked her "And how did I turn out? Did I kill anyone? Do I worship Satan? Do I do all the things they claim that kind of music does to people?"
Answer: "No."
