Kick Mikes
Kick Mikes
What's everyones favorite kick drum mike, our drummer has a cheap $50 dollar CAD kick mike and I don't think its givining what we need.
Now I know the more expensive the better but lets look at bang for the buck hear also.
That new subkick Yamaha has out looks a little interesting but is it ??
The sure Beta 91 ( flat, lays inside on pillow ) looks interesting also.

Don't bitch to me about the economy while you're still buying Chinese products.

Hey tony we in lost ledny use a shure beta 52. I noticed alot of places we play in pittsburgh"the world, nicks fat city, hard rock", they also use the beta 52. I've used the sennhieser before and it also sounds great and seems to have more gain but the shure is better on less noise and feedback. The beta 91 is used by shaun from vs. the earth. He really has a perfect drum tone and that is actually what I wanted to get but GC didn't have them in stock when I was buying them. THE D112 is also about the same same as the beta 52 but I think the polar pattern is not quite as large as the beta 52. However these are all pretty much industry standard mics and you can expect to drop around $200 for any of these choices. My vote goes to the beta 91 or the beta 52.
Hope this helps and let me know what you end up with...

Our drummer has the Yamaha drum-with-a-speaker-for-a-mic thingy, but we haven't used it yet. The pro-sound trade papers describe it as delivering plenty low end, but if you want some attack, or "beater" sound, you'll need an additional mic inside the drum. Hard rock and metal drummers generally want that "snap" to add definition, especially on fast double-kick material.----->JMS

For maximum thump without EQ, EV ND868. These are the best I've used for live sound and in the low end of the BD mike price range at about $190. This is what I used at your gig, ask Christi what she thought.
For cleanest recording, Shure SM91A/Beta 91 -- these don't thump very well, and I replaced these with the ND868. The tiny wiring to the phantom power/preamp stick can also be a pain in the butt. $25 a pop! This is better off in a studio.
For highest SPL and some HF coloration, AKG D112. These added a lot of higher pitch timbre (almost clicking), and I replaced them with SM91As.
I haven't tried the Audix D6, but I've heard good things about them. I have 6 D1s (SD mike) and they kick ass for just about any instrument.
The Shure Beta 52 is OK, but a pain in the ass to mount all the time. I dumped all my mikes with integral stand adapters and found better sounding ones anyway.

...Oh, the freedom of the day that yielded to no rule or time...
I have been using a D112 for a couple of years. A couple of months ago the mic started giving me problems. My click keeps cutting in and out and the mic distorts a little. I've been using an SM57 while I'm waiting for our new mic to come in. I know one thing for sure. 57's SUCK ON A KICK DRUM! I haven't got to check out any mics but the D112 and the Shure Beta 52. Last time I mixed Juiced at the Castle Pub their drummer let me use their Beta 52. I liked the Shure way better than the D112.
I didn't want to double post so I edited this one Tony. I just got to mix Emilys Toybox at the Castle this past Saturday. Their drummer has a Shure Beta 52 mounted inside his kick drum. I HAVE TO HAVE ONE OF THOSE MICS!
Please keep in mind that I don't have any experience with any other mics but the D112 and the Shure Beta 52 (and of course the SM57, don't ever use one in a kick drum). An EV or Audix may very well blow those 2 away. Keep in mind too Tony that I'm a big click kick fan. I love tons of click like Pantera or Slipknot in my kick drum sound. To get an awsome kick drum sound I recommend that you insert some dynamics processing on your kick drum channel no matter what kind of mic you use. I use a gate, compressor and a graphic eq inserted on my kick channel. Hope this helps.

Whoooo Hooooo!
It's my birthday!!!!!!!! Just got a Beta 52. What sux is the band didn't show up last week and the drummer of this week's band uses a ddrum trigger for her kick sound (which kicks ass). I am dying to start using this mic. I don't know how many drummers that come in would be open to the idea of me taping silver dollars to their kick drum heads. My trusty noise gate, compressor, enhancer and graphic eq should give me click for eons.
I get to mix a new band this weekend (March 4th) from State Collage, the JD Mangan band. Does anybody know anything about them? I get to mix Mr. Pink on March 5th (THEY F**KIN ROCK)! Come on out to the Castle this weekend peeps. One more thing, word SO has it that Felix and The Hurricanes are gonna be playing at the Castle real soon.
Please come out and support them as they make their return to Ebensburg.
They are one of my favorite bands EVER!

Kick mics
I have been using the D112 inside the kick about 6 inches from beater, slightly off center. Then I blend in a Marshall MXL (something something...) Not sure of the model number but its a large diaphram mic with a cardiod pattern (cheap also). This blend is great. Its not hard to set up for the phase, cause you really dont have much to worry about. I set the Marshall mic about two inches from the front head on the outside of the drum. I compress/gate the D112 but leave the Marshall open. You will want to roll off the high end of the marshall because its gonna pick everything up in the room about 3K. The D112 is ok on its own because it has a peak from 2 to 4K which is where the beater tap is going to come thru. Hope this helps.

Use both the Beta 52 and the Beta 91 together. I started doing this (per factory recomendations) just "to see" if they were just bullshitting.
Holy crap - no need to EQ (destroy transients), no more smileyface EQ, plenty of esoteric sub bass, and if the 91 is in the same county as the kick the crack will fry your lips off
Funny that I dislike most of SHURE's other stuff though
If I only could use one at a time, BETA 52 is my choice, I would rather have to manufacture the top end(crack) on a kick than the bottom
