Do you want to record audio also? or just midi?
There arent many free ones out there. Audacity & Kristal are prob the most used. Neither of which should be an option at all if you need something really functional and that can cover alot of bases. They both have serious drawbacks. Out of the 2, id go with Kristal!!!!
Reaper is pretty amazing and only costs $60. It does everything that pro tools, cubase, sonar & the others do....and even more!!!
Just about any serious multitrack software can do the job. They all pretty much sound just the same. Its just a matter of what you like and whats easier for you.
If your goal is to record your band, youll need some hardware. Top on that list is a multichannel recording interface. They come in all shapes, sizes and prices.
