I will look at them the same way I look at Journey - Once one of the key members go, the band dies.

Journey is not journey without Perry, and Dream Theater will not be Dream Theater without Portnoy.

Judging by the sounds of that article they just had a spat, and I am sure he will be back in within a couple months. I may be wrong, I hope I am not. But those are some mighty big shoes to fill and I would have to think it would take a hell of alot more work to catch someone up to speed on their material than most bands.
Videos destroyed the vitality of rock and roll. Before that, music said, "Listen to me." Now it says, "Look at me."

I heard about him leaving this morning, & anyone that knows me knows I'm a HUGE Dream Theater fan. This seriously put me in a crap mood for the day (not to mention I'm already feeling like crap, anyway).

I know the band will go on, but he was one of the main song writers & produced pretty much everything. He recorded everything, too. Always documenting.

A sad day in music, for me anyway.

In his statement, he said he has had more fun with this side bands than he's had with Dream Theater in a long time. He oversaw everything, so I can imagine he was pretty stressed all the time & would enjoy just showing up & playing.

Still pretty bummed about the whole thing. I still think of Images & Words as one of my all-time favorite albums. That lineup was probably my favorite incarnation of DT (with Kevin Moore on Keys).

The best lineup is with Jordan Rudess, bar none!

However I do like Images and Words.

I really love Six Degrees, Systematic Chaos, Train of Thought, Black Clouds and Silver Linings. All masterpieces.

I agree that it does kinda sound like they had an argument that ended with Portnoy deciding to quit. I've been a huge fan of DT for a long time and I really hate to see Mike leave the band. I really hope they can work out their problems and have Mike return, but even if that doesn't happen I don't think this means the end of DT. The other members are all fantastic musicians and I'm sure they can still make lots of great music no matter who they play with. This did make me very sad, though. The first time I heard DT I thought, "THIS is the kind of music I've been waiting for!" I've been in love with their music ever since. To have one of them leave is heartbreaking, but I think the remaining members will do well no matter what happens. It might not be the same DT without Portnoy, but it'll still be great music.

I'm gonna get reamed out for this, but now that the initial shock is over with (and realizing that he will probably return eventually) I kinda think this could be a good thing. I think every album since 6 Degrees and ToT has sounded the same. I've been waiting for another Awake or I&W for over a decade!

This may turn out to be a Derek Sherinian thing where they find a new guy and make a killer album that sounds completely unique. As arrogant as Sherinian was, he had an awesome sound and was a major factor in making Falling Into Infinity into a killer album.

It's weird though. If you would've asked me 2 weeks ago what members of DT they absolutely couldn't do without, I would've said Petrucci and Portnoy. But now that Portnoy has actually left, it's clear that DT will still be all that is DT. (However, I don't think they could replace Petrucci!) ((Except maybe Marco Sfogli!))

I am uber-curious to see who they'll get as a replacement for MP. My guess (obvious as it may be) will be either a known virtuoso like Donoati or some completely unknown kid that is a phenom and already has all their songs memorized because he is a crazed DT fanatic!

My guess on the new DT drummer: Rod Morgenstein. He's recorded and/or performed with both Rudess and Myung. Neither Winger nor The Dixie Dregs are all that busy.

The first time I heard dream theater I thought it was good. After a while though (about 2 weeks I think), they just started to sound like musicians who made music because thats what musicians do... It all blended together and nothing stood out..

It might be good to refresh part of the lineup...

I'll admit, I am biased towards Jordan Rudess, but time and time again, bands have shown that anyone can be replaced. Same with any job in the world. No one is indispensible.

As much as I love Dream Theater, and as much as I will miss Mike Portnoy, everyone can be replaced. AC/DC found a way to move on without Bon Scott, Journey found a way to move on without Steve Perry. Hell, every US President has a replacement.
