HOMEGROWN ROCKER 9/5/10 (COVER SONG SPECIAL)

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the Sept. 5 edition of Rocky 99 and Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com) and WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com).

This program was the latest installment of the “Cover Song Special,” as we explored area bands’ and artists’ reworkings and interpretations of other people’s song material! The song variety was wide, from a ‘70s Hot Chocolate hit to three different Bob Dylan selections; from pop hits from Michael Jackson, Madonna and Lady GaGa to a Spinal Tap number! Along the way, we updated “Local Music News,” and spoke with Chris Lawson, upright bass player with The Marauders, who return to stage action after a year-and-a-half away this Friday night, Sept. 10, at Aldo’s! We introduced new covers by Gene The Werewolf, Shades Of June, Joe Konior & Big Soul, The Clarks, The House Band, Original Sin and The Downfall; and broke out a Clove cover song from 2000 for a “Local Music Flashback.”

Here is this week's playlist; the band or artist being covered is in parentheses.

HOUR ONE:

THE BADLEES – “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” (live) (The Band)
CLINT CAROTHERS & FRIENDS – “Emma” (Hot Chocolate)

STERLING KOCH – “Serve Somebody” (Bob Dylan)

HOUR TWO:

THE CLARKS – “What a Wonderful World” (Louis Armstrong)
THE HOUSE BAND – “All Along the Watchtower” (Bob Dylan)
BACKSTREET LAW – “Like A Virgin” (Madonna)

On our next program, our guest will be Johnstown-based singer, songwriter and guitarist Mike Vavrek. We’ll meet and learn about Mike and his music, hear some recorded tracks from his self-produced CD Said Like Singing, and Mike will bring a guitar and play a few live for us! We’ll also update Local Music News, review Metropolis America’s The Hospital for Regrets & Dreams CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner,” and dig into the local music archive for another “Local Music Flashback!” Mike Vavrek visits the “Homegrown Rocker,” this Sunday night!

In Local Music News…

A former State College band favorite is back with a new line-up. Following guitarist/singer Noah Figlin’s recent return to the area from California, The Nightcrawlers have reformed. Noah rejoins founding drummer Steve Arnold and bassist Peter Jogo, along with new members Domenick Swentosky on vocals and guitar, and Erek Zapusta on keys. The new Nightcrawlers will begin their journey at the same venue where it all began, the Phyrst in State College, on Wednesday nights starting this month.

Drummer Jamie Shumack has parted ways with Huntingdon country performer Chris Woodward & ShinDiggin. Jamie is exploring the options for joining a classic rock-geared band endeavor.

Former Pittsburgh national recording group The Gathering Field is reuniting onstage for their first club show in ten years. That show will happen on Saturday, November 20, at Diesel (formerly Nick’s Fat City) in Pittsburgh. Tickets went on sale last weekend for that show.

Pittsburgh Irish rockers Ceann have issued a new live concert DVD. The disc, called Ceann Live at the Sellersville Theater, is available for purchase through the group’s website, www.ceannmusic.com.
